    Happy Springtime!

On the contrary! I want more eggs like that one! My 'caged' pearls. Your finger holds the pearl in, and you can put other gems in with the pearl. Looks gorgeous with a Lapiz bead. Or a black pearl too...Or Rose quartz....

    Here's Fred!

Its my son's 21st next week. He is the guy to call at his work for getting rid of spiders, the others are all scared. He has neglected to name any of my jewellery, but wishes he could have some 'name' jewellery of his own. His current favorite is an Ikepod watch, which he found in The Robb...

Could I get some pointers on how to make my own pearl earrings please?

Hi & welcome Crystal! We all have to start somewhere, and making costume pieces gets you used to handling the tools. If you are unsure about measurements, email or call to ask before you buy. Most suppliers are only too happy to explain their items, as you will become a returning customer if...

    Headpin off-cuts

On another direction, it sounds like you consistently need shorter headpins. I have made my own, at home, before I had my studio, on my gas stove. On one jet, I had a small ramekin of household white vinegar, gently warming, for pickle. On another jet, I used heatproof tweezers to lower the wire...

What's the fastest way to remove the dye layer from "dyed pearls"?

I have had some really bad dyed pearls, which faded in sunlight. I did the dishwashing detergent trial too, which took some of the colour out. However, if the pearls were good enough to be their natural colour, they wouldnt be cost effective enough to dye, I suppose. So dont expect any Akoya...

    educate me about keishi's please

First of all... YUM! Congratulations on your good taste! My personal favorites too. I cant go past the idea of a shape created by nature, (even though there is minimal intervention by man) that is nacre all the way through. It doesnt help, that my first introduction was by way of a $20,000...

    My exotics came already!

Its bad enough to have Pearl envy (even of pearls we have not seen yet). Now I have Tourmaline envy too! Here is my ring, I used to think it was quite a big stone...

    Deadly Abalone Virus

I wonder if there are ever any abalone pearls harvested this close to home, or are they the eating variety only? Can they be collected by anyone with a boat & luck? How strictly are the Fisheries Department laws enforced?

    Nautilus pearl

As an aside, I knew that chattoyance swimming under a milky layer looked familiar. These are pictures of cloisonne enamel, by a world class exponent (who I happened to study under, briefly.) Needless to say, she also loves pearls. She creates this effect, by texturing the base layer of metal...

    My natural white Hanadama necklace

I would rather dance with my pearls on (of course...) and re-string a bit more often.

    Pearl Wedding Jewelry

I also immediately thought of a choker, maybe a few rows, with a really long rope, down to the waist. Empire line is very elegant, good choice.

I can just imagine the stringers being forced to work with these beads... the stricken looks on their faces, perhaps laughing at the vendors who thought customers would pay for these.

    New Freshwaters

There, now you see why I wanted to steer the 'Pearl Naming Committee' in a more romantic direction... Why is it that we are so drawn to muck & smelliness??? Especially when the pearls are so breathtakingly gorgeous? I have not yet forgiven the person responsible for 'pondslime'? I think Souffle...

    New Freshwaters

Is this kind of pearl named yet? Any suggestions? (Still getting over 'pondslime.') There must be a romantic name for them, like sugared almond, or fairy pearls. For heavens sake, dont mention the muck, or the smell. They are too ethereal!

    Japan kasumi 2010 harvest

    Is this a Tahitian?

How difficult/expensive is it to xray the pearl to see if there is a gas bubble? Do I recall seeing somewhere here, that a dentist's xray is sufficient for this?
