Thread size?

Hello, just wanting to pick your brain about the average thread size for Tahitian pearls. I don’t have the strand in hand just yet to measure any drill holes but I am going to go ahead and order the thread before I even get the pearls. What size do they typically take? 3?

For almost all my pearls (up to about 13mm center pearl) I use Medium (30) Serafil. This would be for a drill hole up to 0.8mm.
If your pearls are very large or have an unusually large drill hole, try Heavy.

I buy the normal size of Serafil from Pattye. If it feels too fine for the holes when doubled, then I order the thicker size.

Okay I use the natural silk bead cord, I ordered a size 2&3 so hopefully one works. Thank you all

I gave up on natural silk bead cord. It would knot where I didn't want it to, and it would stretch with wear, and it would break on me halfway through knotting a strand. Once I discovered Serafil from Pattye, I gave away all my silk bead cord. Serafil is so much easier to knot with, and it doesn't stretch over time. And it comes in great colors, so I can match it to the pearls.

I had all the same issues with silk cord attached to a needle. I also had a hard time seating the knot right as the thread wasn't doubled.
