It looks like you have a strand of Tahitian pearls. It's not easy to tell the quality from the photo, but the first two photos show some nice color.

Here's a link with information about Tahitian pearls. Tahitian pearls aren't cheap, so that's a really nice gift you received.

In order to get a good appraisal, it would really have to be someone who specializes in pearls. That would be about one in a thousand for jewelers. This would be a good place to start though.
