September Pearl Paradise Tahitians

Did you get from the white lot with blue overtones?
These are from PP silver tahitians, and I forgot which overtone I chose in the end)) just looked up on PP website - it's with "subtle blue and green overtones".

Oh I know what you mean about akoyas, but luckily the average you can get did change over the past few years and now there is hardly any problem to get really good nacre akoyas if choosing from reputable sellers) no need to go through lots of loose pearls to make your strand)) I quite like mine, even though tahitians are still my one and only love)

Lugana, I see the slight difference in that photo where the akoyas look a littler pinker and the Tahitians a bit golden.

The Tahitians are also visibly larger, and that alone may be reason to keep them, if you like the larger size.

Lugana, you may also keep the Tahitians for the reason that they are a different specimen from the akoyas. I collect specimens, I don't hoard pearls... did I say I don't hoard? that's just a joke :p

Similarity to my larger baroque akoya is one reason that I went for the whiter freeform Tahitians. They are still on their way from PP, but I'm sure they will not look this similar to my silvery akoyas.

I think that the Tahitian strand has some greener overtones that are missing from the akoya. I would keep them for the larger size. Is there any way you can wear them together? I love nested strands.

Do you like both strands?

Would you wear both strands at the same time, because they match?

I have several blue akoya strands, and yes they are the same type of pearl, but I can pretend one strand is Tahitian for the moment. I love wearing them all together.

But, if you feel like you have two strand that seem like twins, and you won't wear them together, then either send the new one back, or sell the old one.

I don't believe the that pearls accumulate energy from around them. I think that people develop attachments to certain pearls because of their history with those pearls, but the pearls themselves doesn't know that. I personally find it hard to get rid of any of my pearls, even the ones I don't wear, or are worn out, because each piece reminds me of someone in my family. However, once I sell the first piece, it will be easy as pie to sell others I don't wear. I know this is true for me, because it happened with my looms. Believe me, looms take up way more room than pearls, and I just couldn't part with them. Then I finally decided to sell them all and buy new ones that consolidated all the various features, and once I did, I was much happier. Where was I going with this? Oh, do what your gut tells you to as far as keeping both or getting rid of one of them.

Oh my, some beautiful new acquisitions have been posted since I last checked in on this thread!

LBoone, that silvery white looks great on you!

Red, I love your new double strand and the bracelet with that fab ombre Fiji pearl!

Perlas, your new white Tahitian strand looks fab on both of the beautiful models! (What a precious baby!) And those large WSS really knock me out!

Newberry, I love your 2 new ropes, and know the colors are even better in person! The gold overtones are especially gorgeous.

Lugana, they do look very similar. They are both lovely. I like the larger size of the Tahitians, but would probably not keep both unless you like the way they look worn together.

Lugana I'm not sure which way you want to be encouraged. I do realize we are talking akoya vs Tahitians but one question......would you be vacillating between the two strands if we were talking white south sea vs white Edison freshwater or metallic white freshwater pearls if they looked much closer than these?

Bottom line is this - the Tahitian strand is beautiful but if you are not happy and don't love it send it back.

The minimum requirement on nacre thickness even for a Hanadama is around .4mm (most in the market are .25mm) while the Tahitians have a minimum of .8mm. (though some sides of Tahitian pearls reach 2mm., even 4mm), now the thickness requirement for Tahitians have changed so we can expect thinner nacre for Tahitian Pearls in the future.

I'd keep the Tahitians for their durability, and also just because they come out beautiful from the mollusks, while most akoyas undergo processing.

I would keep the strand for at least 60 days...see how often you grab for it over the akoya or vice versa. If you don't wear it, send it back. If you don't wear the akoya, sell it! (other PGers have had success rehoming their strands on loupe troop).

Perlas raises a good point ... with the changes in regulation on Tahitian pearls, no one yet knows how the quality may be affected, and if we will start to see strands with less nacre and quality. We can thankfully rely on our trusted vendors to protect us as best they can, but you may want to factor Perlas' words of wisdom into your decision. For what it's worth, I think the akoyas and the Tahitians make a lovely nested set; so much alike, yet subtly different in both overtones and sizes. If you like a nested look, and the option of connecting the 2 together into a rope ... However, there's a whole world of pearls out there if diversity is a better option for you :)

Thank you for all your advice ladies :) yes, probably I should have gone for a peacock overtone or white freeforms.. I guess I will think for another week and then decide whether to contact PP and see the options (return or exchange). So far tried it with lots of different colours of clothes and still couldn't determine a different-to-akoyas way to wear them.

As for the nacre thickness - while I do not consider this change to be a positive thing, I tend to be the optimist here. As I don't think it will make dramatic changes to those who care.

It will just make some poor-quality pearls actually coming from Tahiti accessible to more people who care about the word "tahitian" more than about the pearl itself. Probably those will be mostly same people who today buy on ebay AAAAA+++++++ very very REAL tahitian pearls for 39 dollars shipped from China. It is like producing fake Chanel handbags - ugly, inevitable, but real Chanel boutiques don't really suffer. Because they have their clientele who cares for some other product qualities but for its name.

My opinion is backed up with the idea that this ridiculous amendment will not decrease the number of good-quality pearls, but will increase the number of tahitian pearls in general. To me its more the question of how many farms will join in. I guess those that are in financial trouble nowadays might be tempted to join the short-cycle production, while the farms who have reputable buyers - would they bother losing their reputation and putting low-quality pearls with their farm's name on it?

Good question actually. And a cool illustration))) I guess if all the three would be in the same size, I would consider rearranging at least one of them (in a tin cup, or with rondelles, or with semi-precious stones). I'm going to spend an evening thinking if my akoyas or tahitians could be rearranged (without breaking the necklaces yet of course)).. any ideas for silvery pearls please?)

Lugana my go to is always a tin cup. I have many. I love my strands but find that they can be boring. Seldom will I wear a plain strand without a enhancer unless it's a double or triple strand. I'm at work and don't have access to my pictures so I can't post examples right now.

You could also have one of the strands made into a double row bracelet. I really like my pearl bracelets because *I* get to see them while I'm wearing them.

I think turning the Tahitians into a rope with black spinel rondelles and pearls randomly scattered would be a terrific look. One strand of pearls is about right to make a rope when you add the rondelles in between.

Here are a few of my tin cups. Each has a center interest of some sort.

Last but not least you could wear them nested together with an enhancer (this is my white body Tahitian rope doubled)

Have fun figuring out what to do with your strand. But in the end if you still are troubled about it send it back.

Yes, I bought them, BlackPearlDude. I really shouldn't have as I indulged myself during the GSS sale. However, I was sick of having a a rope of Tahitians wound around my neck to imitate the look of a multi strand necklace slowly cause death by strangulation during an evening. I also had all those wonderful pearl points for a further discount. I will post pictures when I receive them. Happy shopping everyone.
