September Pearl Paradise Tahitians

Thanks JP, Frost Me and Hanadama!

Hanadama, I just saw your silvers. They are quite unique as well in a single strand. Do they look like metal balls in some lighting? Because of the body color, I assume they can appear silver than the whites?

If anyone plan to buys these white tahitians, it looks good as a rope. Lucky for newberry to get one of the first picks and in person. :)

Thanks Perlas! Yes, they appear very silver and metallic!

Received mine this week - lovely pearls, but I guess I'm at the point when it starts getting difficult to buy something you don't have already :D

These look very much alike to one of my baroque akoyas. It might sound weird - tahitians looking like akoyas - but they do)) and these akoyas don't have metallic-blue overtone, so in bright light the resemblance persists.. These are the two strands next to each other.

Tahitians vs akoyas

I try to persuade myself that tahitians are tahitians and they cannot compare to baroque akoyas (at least for me - I'm a tahitian girl), and the strand does look good with my recently acquired ombre white/gold south sea pendant (akoyas don't look good with it). I want to keep the strand :( I hate departing with pearls))

But my husband (who is a cruel person when it comes to my pearls :) ) congratulated me on finally finding a twin sister of the strand ("Darling, you don't understand - EACH pearl is unique" is my key argument when justifying a new piece to him))).

My point that these tahitians have different light reflection to akoyas sounds weak to him. More opinions please?..

I can see that they look quite similar in terms of size and body colour but the black background has killed the overtones!

Do you have any photos of the pearls against a white background and on the neck?

hanadama, oh I'm a well known bad photographer of pearls)) I've tried some more shots against lighter background and on the neck..

Tahitians vs akoyas 2

Tahitians vs akoyas 3

I know u hate to hear this. But I can't tell substantial difference from the photos. How bout a shot with the pendant so we can see the difference since the strand looks good with it and not the akoys

Those 2 strands are an amazing match ... use matching clasps and you'd have a rope!

Perlas ... the pearls are lovely ... but that model ... OH how precious and adorable !!!

Those akoyas resemble the Tahitians, it's quite difficult to tell apart. But I think technically akoyas have thinner nacre than Tahitians. That's the only difference I can think of. Anyway, both strands are lovely and lustrous

Yes they look remarkably similar to me too. Personally, I'd want my pearl strands to be different and I'd either return the Tahitians or gift or sell the akoyas. But the important thing is, do you love them? And do they meet different pearl needs ie would you wear them with the same or different outfits and for the same or different occasions?

Thank you ladies for all your comments! At least it's reassuring that it's not only me who sees the resemblance)

Good idea) that would probably be the most contrast-origin rope I have)) as I've never mixed akoyas with tahitians before) although I do have some ropes in similar look, so apart from pearl-type contrast it wouldn't offer a lot of variety.. It still doesn't go in my head how akoyas could ever look like tahitians. I wish they didn't)) because I really like the uniformity of colour in this tahitian strand - a very well-matched strand colorwise.

I prefer mine different as well.. I do sell some strands on a local market stand - we are sponsoring a K-9 kennel over here and it goes well to that. I anyway buy too many pearls :) so have plenty left, and I like designing jewellery. But this akoya strand is pretty well worn - it was actually my strand, and I don't really believe into selling/giving away personal pearls. I kind of believe pearls accumulate some energy around them if you know what I mean?.. Please don't call me mad on this))

So I will torture you a little bit more. I've been trying to contrast these two strands against different pieces to get a better idea of them. Here are some results:

1. The strands vs. darker colour tahitians. I hoped it will bring out some overtones - and it does make some pink to appear in akoyas (middle strand), but still not an awful lot of difference..

The strands vs. darker colour tahitians

2. The tahitian strand with south sea pendant. The pendant is light gold at the bottom, and it kind of brings out some golden overtones in the tahitians, while akoyas seem to have more pink metallic overtone next to it.

Silver with ombre south sea

3. The problem is that the south sea pendant was meant for another necklace already, and I wanted to knot it into the strand this time.

Silver white south sea

4. Just out of the blue tried it with a metallic freshwater pendant and liked the result)) but again couldn't see much difference between the strands.

Silver with metallic Freshwater Pearl

Sorry for photo spamming you so much. So far I'm closer to returning the tahitians (since there is nothing I can do with akoyas), but still unsure. I've never returned any tahitians at all)))) or maybe I could knot them into some other project..

Thanks Pearl Dreams and Cathy Keshi!

Laguna,
I was actually waiting for someone to notice the similarity to akoyas. Did you get from the white lot with blue overtones?

They will look similar because the Tahitians reflect light rather than have them pass through the nacre like SSPs.

I have a piece of white tahitian but the overtone is more like pistachio so I was curious about the white with silver or blue overtone, I have seen them (though not often) on a multicolored Tahitian strand though. A few years back, I unknowingly bought baby white Tahitians with blue overtones as well sold as south seas.....they were not as lustrous as my PP strand and badly matched so I thought they were SSPs. Only when I received my PP strand I realized they were Tahitians! I used them to make a multicolor rope due to poor matching.

I also realized when I saw the strand that they look similar to high luster akoyas and the ones with blue overtones is a doppelgänger for blue akoyas, only it's evident up close they are Tahitians due to thicker nacre.

Those akoyas resemble the Tahitians, it's quite difficult to tell appart. But I think technically akoyas have thinner nacre than Tahitians. That's the only difference I can think of. Anyway, both strands are lovely and lustrous

I am not a fan of akoyas due to the thin nacre (based on my standards), and even the nice ones sometimes, I easily see the bead on the drill holes. I am thinking of purchasing though some small top quality blue akoyas. The white tahitians, you can see in person the nacre is thick and one can tell them apart from the akoyas but they look very similar to the blue akoyas....but then maybe if I see an akoya with at least .8mm nacre thickness then maybe I wouldn't know which is which...

I kind of believe pearls accumulate some energy around them if you know what I mean?.. Please don't call me mad on this))

If you believe this, you might not want to sell or give away your gemstones, pearls, crystals... they've been attuned to your energy after you've worn them. People told me that diamonds are a strong energy amplifier. Pearls absorb negative energy too that's why you have to take them off when you feel negative.
Feel free to use your own discernment, Lugana :)
