New Golden South Sea Fatty

I was trying to take a shot of the pearl balanced on my hand and it rolled off and bounced down the patio. Now it has a couple of little dings. Sh*t. Oh well, guess it better get used to it if it's going to be mine. That's a fuzzy picture but you can kinda see it.

Tough decision! I kinda like the idea of mounting that beauty on a wide band. It might balance it out and and make it spin less. If you don't mind the 10k that might work. Can't wait to hear what everyone else says!

Sorry - about the color - looks gold with green to me.

Edited because somehow the wrong quote got connected here. I was commenting on the tragic dropping of the new pearl:

Oh No!!! I've done that with one of my Tahitian earrings (dropped it while putting it back on after the gym and it rolled through all the grit that had come off people's shoes). I tell myself you can't see the scratches when it's on....

You probably can't see the scratches when it's on.

Still, I'm amazed that scratches are happening. I have a couple of large unset freshwater that are so well balanced that when I look at them, they roll off wherever and hit the floor...but never a mar., knock wood! I Don't get it; can the nacre be so different? Of course, maybe I haven't dropped them on cement or concrete...but I have dropped them on marble, and ceramic tile.

Maybe it's because mine aren't seeded with a bead? Do Edison's, or Ripples, crack too?

I really like the Hawaiian bands too!

and I'm really curious about the bead-seeded vs all nacre and scratching/cracking issue.

I'll try to get a better close up of it. I was surprised that while the two dents are small, I do see white in them when I'd expect to see gold. Anyone know more?

Something else I didn't expect, the pearl looks too light (to me) when it's up against the 18k bands. I like it more when hardly any band shows. Then it looks darker.

Can anyone who knows tell me what color golden it is? In real life, it does not look as dark as in the pics so I don't think it's deep gold. Also, I can't determine an overtone color so I guess it doesn't have one?

I love the PP choices. It's a beautiful pearl no matter the shade. Maybe a white band will give it contrast?

Well now I see why it seems like so many golden pearls are set in white gold. Before, I'd always think that looked like it didn't go together very well (from photos). But IRL, my golden pearl fades to peachy against that bright yellow gold.

I got the plain yellow gold PP band in the end. It's thin so you don't see all that much of it. That's just because almost all of my jewelry is yellow gold so I wanted it to match, though.

I had a golden pearl with greenish overtones that I wanted set into a ring. I took it to my local jeweler and we played around with various metals. White gold was o.k., but brushed palladium really made it sing. So that is what we went with.

I really like the PP setting you chose, it's very classic and elegant. Will you set it yourself or take it to a jeweller? How are pearls set anyway? Are they just screwed onto the ring or are they glued as well?

@Thanks, Red. I am pea green with envy at your pearl collection!

@Thanks, Hanadama. I have that same setting for my Tahitian ring and wear it with my small diamond ring guards so I know I'll like it.

My husband does the pearl gluing for me. He uses some two part epoxy stuff and just dips the pin in, plugs it in and holds it for awhile. It's worked just fine so far. The pearl is glued onto the pin, but doesn't screw in.

Also, about the ding from dropping the pearl, I think just appears white-ish in the two teensy spots where the nacre is roughed up rather than actually being a different color. I, too, have dropped other pearls or accidentally banged them into things and not noticed any damage so I guess it's just the particulars of the fall. I could kick myself for that bone-headed stunt!

I wonder if there's anything I can put on or do to the dings to make them less noticeable? They're not a huge deal but they do bug me. Maybe some kind of buffing or a teensy spot of some substance applied with a toothpick? Of course I'd just be fixing it to please myself, not to ever try to sell it with undisclosed doctoring. Any ideas?

Sorry to hear about the tiny dings in your pearls. A few years back there was a discussion about "buffing" pearls over on pricescope, as one of the members had her jeweler regularly do this to her freshwater pearls for improved luster. But I don't recall that we got any specifics, such as any polishing cream used.

Have you tried wiping out, or washing, the dings? I'm wondering if what you are seeing is a tiny bit of nacre dust and it may come off.

Can you see them with the naked eye at a social distance, or at the distance you would normally be looking it at when wearing it? If not, then I suggest you not worry about it any more.

Back when I first received my larger metallic white pearl earrings, I took them onto the kitchen to show my husband when he got home from work. Down went one of the largest ones, rolled all over our ceramic tile floor near the door (where sand and salt were tracked in). There are a few small marks on it, but I can't see them without the loupe, so I decided I would not worry about it.

(But I did learn not to show him my pearls in the kitchen!)

I learned not to jog while wearing big pearl earrings, especially if they're only clip ons. I love the PP setting, it's elegant with simple lines, wish they have half a size smaller.
Sea Urchin, nice choice! It's probably also more cost efficient getting a new band than converting your existing band.

It's a beautiful pearl and great setting choice! Very nice that your hubby can set it for you.

Don't feel too badly about the dings. A couple of years ago I dropped a beautiful white SS pendant; the underside cracked but it's tiny and doesn't show when I wear it so I don't think about it. I'm sure you'll love this ring!
