Nautilus pearl

The Pearl Professor (scroll down) posted this amazing photo on his home page today (Dr. Tom, are you holding out on us here?). Unbelievable pearls, leaving one to wonder still if there can't be just a little brilliant nacre mixed in with those wonderfully excitable flames.

This is the pic I was referring to earlier on this thread. Saw these pictures at the WPF. Beautiful!

?Ken Scarratt's monograph on Nautilus pearls?has studied every known Nautilus pearl in his lab, a total of 5.
Another pregnant pause as we await Scarratt's monograph. I wonder if the additional pictures will also be of perfectly round pearls, since the Nautilus seems incapable of producing anything else?

I believe pearl #1 on the pearl professor last post to be a nautilus pearl too. The nautilus is also capable of perfect drop shaped pearls ;-)

I was recently told that only one pearl has received a Nautilus certificate from either GIA or SSEF. Can anyone confirm that they are in possession of a certificate from either GIA or SSEF stating Nautilus Pearl. This would be very helpful to me as I am trying to establish the legitimacy of this elusive pearl.
Thank you.
Jeremy

Given lack of precedent, how is certification even possible? What is it that defines a Nautilus Pearl? Given the nacreous AND non-nacreous surface regions of the Nautilus shell, how can the pearl be matched to its host/producer?

I have no doubt there are methods but it would be extremely interesting if someone with more technical background could enlighten us here.

ditto, Steve!

Wouldn't it be great to ask Ken Scarret (sp?), to explain what the precedent is or the tests used if any, or the logic behind his decision. He was the one that decided, right? Are there even any photos of the pearl in situ? There has to be a provenance.

I am really looking forward to some news here.

I am really chomping at the bit too, but Ken's done a lot of work and letting the cat out of the bag before publishing his monograph might be detrimental to its success. Patience is a virtue. I'll keep reminding myself that. ;)

Wow, three colloquial phrases in one paragraph!

Chomping, impatient, and with a cat that won't quit nuzzling my fingers and let me type at the moment?

Upon reflection, if Mr. Scarratt's monologue is halfway convincing and we accept it as gospel, what could ever follow 'Desperately Seeking Nautilus Pearl' for excitement on Pearl-Guide?!

Hi, All,

Sorry for delay as I was deep in Celebes area. I have a GIA cert for a Nautilus pompilius.

Best regards,
Tom

I spent some time talking with Ken Scarrat about Nautilus pearls. He had some pretty convincing comments about their provenance. I'm looking forward to reading about them when he publishes.

Too bad it won't be published before my rare pearl talk in April. I'll just have to wait like everyone else. <sigh>

Hi Tom
Thanks for the reply. I assume the pearl offered in Dubai also has a Cert. Are these the only two out there that have certs.
Best Regards,
Jeremy

Hi, Jeremy,

The one offered in Dubai was mine.

Somebody on the web in Europe advertised about 5 Nautilus pearls which they claimed had been certified by SSEF in Basel. Since I've done business with SSEF, I contacted them to ask if true. They said SSEF has never certified a Nautilus.

Best regards,
Tom

You are probably referring to these pearls:
http://www.naturalpearls.ch/7901.html

Some of them look very similar to the GIA certified ones.

Thanks Tom.
In talking with the labs it appears that you have the only pearl with a cert. The pearls on the for mentioned site appear to be from Tridacna.
