Actually, I was thinking Maeshori included the bleaching and pinking. I don't care about tightening the skins, but I think "untreated" may very well mean unbleached in some cases and nothing in Mr Yakota's statement contradicts that. He seems to say that not all pearls are bleached as part of the pre-treatment, right? Then what is the controversy about? Who gets the unbleached pearls? Someone does. And if they are unbleached, they aren't pinked either, correct?
My concern with bleached pearls is precisely that I would rather have off colors than porous pearls. No wonder hairspray is a no no after the pearls are put on! No wonder all my M-in-Law's Akoyas are slightly yellowed with age and my naturals are the same off white as they always were with both having about the same length of wear. No wonder so many akoyas do not age well and turn that dirty shade of yellow almost the same as the old fake pearls have. No wonder.
