Oh, interesting! What quality about them makes you sure that those types of pearls are not Tay? I remember reading that thread and that it was made me think maybe it is a Tay pearl. But, you've seen Tay pearls in person - what about them is different? Is it a texture or color or shape? All the Tay pearls I've seen on the web are round and the ones in that thread and my ring look like blisters.

I have seen the famous Abernathy Pearl Tay pearl at the recent London pearls exhibition, the orient is very specific " like a cloudy day" hard to explain, but it was not permitted to take photos, even then, photos do not allow to capture the specific orient of pearls anyway.
Those Tay pearls we are referring too look flat at bottom, so can be blisters.
Of course, Bodecia if you experienced to see more Tay pearls later, you know more than us about,
but when I look at mine, the orient different, neither south seas-like, nor freshwater-like ...

I agree with you Anna, all the northern european river pearls I have seen have a very specific orient, more milky and dull than other types of pearls. Nice, but different, less showy.
If some day you can go and visit the Dresden Green Vault in Germany, you will see beautiful old necklaces which reflect very well this feature. You cannot forget it once you have seen it.
At the London exhibition, the necklace of Mary Stuart was very characteristic of this special orient IMO.

I actually posted to another thread (I'll have to find it, I forgot which one it was already!) that I found a passage in the Strack book that these pearls are actually small polished Turbo shells! LOL it was this thread that I posted that - page 10

I know, that luster is SO deceiving! Before chancing on that entry I would have sworn up and down that they HAD to be some kind of Tay or other Scottish river pearls.

I would not say the luster is deceiving, very charming indeed, well not a pearl at final, that the lesson of that saturday !

After many delays and (not so) patient waiting, the Victorian pearl ring has finally arrived! The pearls are all 5mm in diameter, one is cream, one is a very light gray, and the center is a deep gold with a green orient. Love this ring! The center pearl is definitely the star, I hope it's a poe pipi! It came just as I was about to leave for work, so I snapped some quick pics while the light was still around and had to wait to upload till I got back home.

Thanks, Pattye! It was difficult to capture the green overtone even though it's strong. I'm going to take some more photos tomorrow, any suggestions on how to get the orient to show in photographs? I'll probably do some candling as well

Hi Andrea, they have to be natural Pacific pearls, and a great curiosity and conversation piece in its day.

A gold pearl, a gray, and white pearl would have been a most rare combination back in the day,
and that gold color is so reminiscent of the poe pipi I'd say it is a dead cert.

One has to wonder about the ring's history. Still it is in appreciative hands now.

I thought the same thing when I saw it as well. I am going to do some candling tonight, so maybe Dave can give his thoughts on if they are definitely natural. I've been having poe pipi fever for a while now, and I think this ring has only made me want more pipis! I've been doing a lot of staring since yesterday

I have seen older pieces with color combos of natural pearls, but not with golds as deep as poe pipis get. It's such a unique color! I like to think the ring belonged to a woman who liked pearls but maybe could only afford a demure ring, but one that elucidates a secret smile when worn.

Nice ring.

It certainly has the color and luster of P. maculata, but the shape and setting are confusing.

Perhaps I need to see more views, because it looks like two pearls glued together. At one angle, it looks like a mushroom.

Dave, there is a ring in the middle of the center pearl, giving it that mushroom appearance. I have no idea if that occurs naturally in P. maculata or not. Good spotting!
