Art and culture are pleasure before any other consideration (my opinion)
Le louvre is a very very big museum.
You first need to know what you want to see and go and see it only, nobody likes everything .
If you want to "have art for money spent " you will be disappointed,
you will have a very tiring day and miss a lot of interesting things being tired.
Choose painting or sculpture or antique or what ever you like ,
but going to see everything in art might be boring
Anyway, in Le Louvre things are spread in many different places and photos of pearls jewelry, I have taken and put in that thread are not gathered ... (I was tired myself too, but not bored )
Ask at entrance about what you want to see and ... enjoy !

I did not intended first to promote Paris museum, (and I noticed there are pearls jewelry in Washington )
but for who wants to know about jewelry in Paris :
- Le louvre :
1 - gets a" treasure room" with some pieces of what I posted but not all, some are spread all over
2 - gets the "Apollon gallery" with treasure of french crown (I have not posted pictures yet so I will not disclose what's in as pearls) there is a big pink diamond (called hortensia) and emerald parure and king's crowns and else
- The Cluny museum with the lady and the Unicorn tapestry : pictures I posted at Middle ages period some pages before
- The jewlery Galerie of Art decoration near le Louvre, I have not posted picts yet, truly fantastic : a journey through ages in jewelry
- The gallery of coins that has the Sostratos cameo and curiosities

Sorry museums are not free entrance ; there has been a free entrance trial that finished end of june...

I think we might skip Le Louvre then... When we were at Versailles last year we just mainly walked through it all being really bored. (Sorry! I know it?s probably amazing but it?s just not my/our thing...) It was a really hot day too, I think that might have been a drawback on the experience.

However, we?ll still visit lots of places in Paris. Catacomes de Paris for example... Seems scary. Off topic, sorry.

I shall first focus of what I shot in museums,
Of course there will be a lot missing, then after when the museums photos will be all posted, we will advise if it can be continued by pictures out of books or else and then share a more complete story of pearls .

The "sea creature" is called "the Dolphin" and nicknamed " the Pearl Dragon" XVI century enameled gold and pearl. Yes, it is a pin.
Comes from the antique "french Diamonds Crown jewels" .
France lost a lot of french crown jewels at the revolution (end XVIII), one part was stolen and another was bought by Tiffany, they are some remaining at Le Louvre (again this boring one )

The other brooch is not an eagle, sorry Caitlin, it is said to be a dove.
Enameled gold and pearl, more recent, Paris, middle of XVII century.
I can read too roman figures but the legend does not say more.
Who knows what inspired the american eagle : you should tell

About what is inspiring a symbol :
Napoleon the first emperor (XIX century), could not take the lily flower which was the royal symbol of dynasty before the revolution,
so he took the bee as his symbol, who was first in favor in Crete 1800 BC

Huh? ...and just what pict are you referring to? I don't see one--not from Washington or anywhere else.

As regards the origin of the American Eagle: I would imagine that it is just a matter of historical and traditional interest. The eagle seems rather ubiquitous as a national symbol down through the centuries. However, not all the founders were in agreement on the use of this bird. Benjamin Franklin wanted for us to use the turkey! He apparrently regarded this stealthy and extremely wary bird as smarter than the eagle. It had to be before the advent of the domesticated turkey--the dumbest thing in feathers!

A big baroque pearl as body"s bull
3 drop shaped pearls at pendant bottom
1 round pearl above Europe.
XVI century, enameled and gold pendant from Italy

Is was common at that period of Renaissance to create monsters inspired (or big animals) jewels from baroque shaped pearls.
