How old is this pearl ? Play again !

......... because we both find art very, very (sorry) boring. ........

So if you ever think art is boring, don't go !
Art and culture are pleasure before any other consideration (my opinion)
Le louvre is a very very big museum.
You first need to know what you want to see and go and see it only, nobody likes everything .
If you want to "have art for money spent " you will be disappointed,
you will have a very tiring day and miss a lot of interesting things being tired.
Choose painting or sculpture or antique or what ever you like ,
but going to see everything in art might be boring
Anyway, in Le Louvre things are spread in many different places and photos of pearls jewelry, I have taken and put in that thread are not gathered ... (I was tired myself too, but not bored ;) )
Ask at entrance about what you want to see and ... enjoy !

I did not intended first to promote Paris museum, (and I noticed there are pearls jewelry in Washington ;) )
but for who wants to know about jewelry in Paris :
- Le louvre :
1 - gets a" treasure room" with some pieces of what I posted but not all, some are spread all over
2 - gets the "Apollon gallery" with treasure of french crown (I have not posted pictures yet so I will not disclose what's in as pearls) there is a big pink diamond (called hortensia) and emerald parure and king's crowns and else
- The Cluny museum with the lady and the Unicorn tapestry : pictures I posted at Middle ages period some pages before
- The jewlery Galerie of Art decoration near le Louvre, I have not posted picts yet, truly fantastic : a journey through ages in jewelry
- The gallery of coins that has the Sostratos cameo and curiosities

Sorry museums are not free entrance ; there has been a free entrance trial that finished end of june...

For more, you can send me a private message.
:cool:I was in Sweden some years ago .. and liked it

Hi Anna
You have an incredible richess of museums for historical pearls!

Is the top one an American eagle? I can't quite read the Roman numerals....

Maybe it is a prototype for our eagle...I can't even figure out what the other one is, an octopus?

I think we might skip Le Louvre then... When we were at Versailles last year we just mainly walked through it all being really bored. (Sorry! I know it?s probably amazing but it?s just not my/our thing...) It was a really hot day too, I think that might have been a drawback on the experience.

However, we?ll still visit lots of places in Paris. Catacomes de Paris for example... Seems scary. Off topic, sorry.

I am a terrible guesser, but am enjoying following this thread very very much, thanks CLICLASP, I do hope this thread will continue for a long time! Wish I had known years ago that jewelry related to history!!!! I would have not daydreamed through so many history courses!

Pattye
so many pearls, so little time

Thanks for encouraging me, anyway, you did not play

And what's the anser to :
Today's game is : classify in order of period, which one is more ancient? the eagle or the said "octopus"

I am not going to give you the answer so easily,
you have to get some brain work first :p

Somehow the "sea creature" looks a bit older, seems to be a stick pin of sorts, I think that is an older "theme"-------I hope as we get to more modern times, you will show some Faberge------

I shall first focus of what I shot in museums,
Of course there will be a lot missing, then after when the museums photos will be all posted, we will advise if it can be continued by pictures out of books or else and then share a more complete story of pearls .

Or,

Should I travel more to get more photos myself ? :D

Since you need permission from each copyright owner to use pictures out of a book, I think you should TRAVEL to get your own! I see a great coffee table book on Pearl History coming out of your efforts!

Thanks again for encouraging
Don't forget about the book The pearl from Sylvia Malaguzzi for pearl history (see amazon if needed)
FYI, for more fun, I tried to bring pictures and different infos to avoid putting the book into that thread .

Well, about today's game : Caitlin and Pattye, you were right

The "sea creature" is called "the Dolphin" and nicknamed " the Pearl Dragon" XVI century enameled gold and pearl. Yes, it is a pin.
Comes from the antique "french Diamonds Crown jewels" .
France lost a lot of french crown jewels at the revolution (end XVIII), one part was stolen and another was bought by Tiffany, they are some remaining at Le Louvre (again this boring one :p)

The other brooch is not an eagle, sorry Caitlin, it is said to be a dove.
Enameled gold and pearl, more recent, Paris, middle of XVII century.
I can read too roman figures but the legend does not say more.
Who knows what inspired the american eagle : you should tell :)

About what is inspiring a symbol :
Napoleon the first emperor (XIX century), could not take the lily flower which was the royal symbol of dynasty before the revolution,
so he took the bee as his symbol, who was first in favor in Crete 1800 BC
don't miss to click on the link hereunder a very very famous antique gold piece

Enjoy ;)

Huh? ...and just what pict are you referring to? I don't see one--not from Washington or anywhere else.

As regards the origin of the American Eagle: I would imagine that it is just a matter of historical and traditional interest. The eagle seems rather ubiquitous as a national symbol down through the centuries. However, not all the founders were in agreement on the use of this bird. Benjamin Franklin wanted for us to use the turkey! He apparrently regarded this stealthy and extremely wary bird as smarter than the eagle. It had to be before the advent of the domesticated turkey--the dumbest thing in feathers!

Oh Dear, I am trying to think sooooooo far back-something about Greek mythology--a minotaur-maybe? It is gorgeous and so detailed

So the Minotaure? I have another idea ;)
Has someone another proposal ?
Has anyone seen this piece in the National Gallery of Art in Washington ?
I hope I shall go there one day

I think the one in post 134 is a bull dancer from Crete. There were women that did that too. But that looks like an eagle head and neck-

Who was is that who went into the Labyrinth to take on the Minotaur?

Theseus killed the minotaur.
and is it the abduction of Europa by Zeus as a bull?

Hello,
That my opinion too, Europe saved by Jupiter as a bull
A big baroque pearl as body"s bull
3 drop shaped pearls at pendant bottom
1 round pearl above Europe.
XVI century, enameled and gold pendant from Italy

Is was common at that period of Renaissance to create monsters inspired (or big animals) jewels from baroque shaped pearls.
See it again in Washington  and let your opinion thenafter
