I am loving your travelogue, Remulus! The little details really create the great visuals. I really enjoy haggling as well and I'm sure it's an art in China. My dad has visited the country a few times (as a tourist) but I've never made it to that continent. I travel alone mostly and have found that most people around the world are only too happy to help someone lacking in language skills; I'm so glad to hear that's true for China as well! I can't wait to see more photos and stories of interactions with vendors. Well done!

I'm loving your story Remulus! It is so brave of you to take public transportation in a country where you don't speak the language and English is not widely spoken. I've been to China a few times and have taken public transportation, but only because I had very clear instructions and had some idea where to go. No where as complicated as yours.

I'm sorry you got escorted out of a few shops. Negotiating in China is a fine art of charm, smiles, friendliness and know away. My son got really good at it when he went. He was only five but managed to get all the sales ladies to give him candy along with a cute kitty watch for about $2 in exchange for a picture with him. His famous tactic was, "but I'm only a kid!" when he was quoted a high price. I'm not sure that tactic will work for us adults though.

I love all the details ....and I can't believe how brave you were to do this..and to do it wandering around from bus station to bus station with a bag of cash !!!! It would have been so scary ! And I had to laugh when you talked about almost getting tossed out of a shop ! And great photos !! Thanks so much!!
And I agree with Tucs.. I think China would be quite difficult. My son was there for 8 months..really interesting stories..not for the faint hearted unless you are going all 5 star.
