1622 sunken treasure contains 1,000's of pearls

Remember this is still a fantasy! Currently plan to arrive to Miami International around noon on Saturday 2/9 for my flight home. The idea would be to head directly from there to Key West, evening and Sunday free with a visit to the Fisher laboratories on Monday morning 2/11, return to Miami airport area the same afternoon/evening. Would propose to simply share the gas and car rental among all participants, hotels and meals per individual (unless a consensus is found for a mini 'Pearl-Guide' convention venue!).

Need to digest this a bit, but that's how it would happen if it does?
 
Strack's lecture in Tucson is the 9th. And I think just about everyone who's going will be there around those dates. Sascha is a wonderful man, world traveller, pearl lover, I think you and he would get along famously. I need to see if I can schedule it around work.
 
Yes, I know and I am disappointed not to be able to be in Tucson that day. Next year for sure.

Aww, rats - I leave for home from Orlando on the morning of the 11th :( (hubby has a conference at WDW).
 
Oh Boo! Please, please see if you can change your schedule to fly back Tuesday out of Miami. The rest is doable! I can come up to Orlando to get you. Oh, please! Please? Uh, did I say please?

I noticed in my reread of the entire thread that posts number 9 and 21 need links back to the original picture and article. That way we are advertising for them.

Steve, since you have contacted them, maybe you could ask for permission to do that -with links.

knotty, heve you continued to pursue Akira? I think this would be a great article for you, I hope you follow up.

I'll follow up on my earlier contact with the folks in Key West upon my return from European travels next week.
 
I've written Blue Water. No response. Re: Ms. Hyatt. She doesn't know me from Adam, no reason to respond. I still think it may be a conflict of interest for her to discuss the pearls. I would love to go down there. Just don't know if I can swing it. I'd love to see Dr. Tom go.
 
did anyone post this yet?? some of the pearls from the shipwreck appear to be up for auction on ebay.... here

From the listing:
"Up for auction is a serial numbered lot of pearls from the spanish shipwreck "Santa Margarita", sunk in a hurricane in 1622. None of the found pearls have been sold or auctioned off before now. I was an investor with the salvage company at the time of discovery."

Much appreciated. Clearly one of the more cash-short investors jumping the gun, the offer apparently devoid of images of the pearls in his personal allocation. The 'investors' had no control, they agreed to accept what Fisher/Blue Water decided to distribute as their share. And as no official value has yet been determined, it's unclear to me how the allocations might have been done with any degree of fairness.

The Blue Water site does provide the first convincing photos of some very attractive pearls in the collection.

are you sure? I spoke with Blue water today in some length about the collection and they do indeed have an "appraisal value" for the lot.

And you are right they have some very interesting pearls in the collection.
 
The e-bay ad is more than likely legit. But a grand? Really cash-strapped investor -- probably wished it has been some of that gold instead. I can't WAIT to tear into the GIA report! I thought I read somewhere the report was closer to 200 pages. This must be the Reader's Digest version. It does appear on the surface to hold the key to the grading scales listed on the certificates posted on e-bay.
 
Well, that was quick. Lead contamination? Hadn't even crossed my mind. How did Slraep and Valeria miss that one? This report contains no data on how the pearls were cleaned (for want of a better word). Hmmmm, lead. No tooth-testing these babies!
 
What lead contamination ? 'Thought you had to actually ingest the stuff (in whatever odd way it would be retained in tissues) to get contaminated, it ain't radiating poison around or anything. If buckshot is not that bad, wearing pearls that used to be inside a led box doesnt sound dangerous.

I wonder if the Ebayer in cause hasn't found the tiny pearls a little hard to use in any way but to stare at (i.e. collectables, not jewelry material)...
