Your views on a Practical Pearl Ring

Hand washing... haven't thought of that 'exotic' source of exposure (!) despite taking a while to come up with the list above. I was indoctrinated early on into taking rings off [the one mentioned excepted]. Is it common practice not to?

Hand washing is a disaster. I remember about the pearl when I dry hands, so I just pray that the soap was a soft one...

I am already getting used to the schedule of the heating systemr: dressing up - no rings, going to work - ring on, comeing home - ring off, after dinner - ring on, going to bed - ring out.

Pearls make rings impractical. There is always going to be that instance where the pearl ring has to be removed as opposed to a hard gemstone ring which can withstand handwashing, and other routine tasks.

Pearl rings, just aren't practical. Unless the owner isn't concerned about replacing the pearl periodically, they aren't practical. Beautiful, but not practical.

I have posted this picture before. It is Kether's Bahraini natural pearl. This ring has been worn a great deal since the 1950's when my mom lost one of her earrings and had this one made into a ring. The pearl is still in great shape, but the gold is a bit battered. I think the design is an abstracted oyster.

There are particular rings, which have magical powers. I take great delight in telling couples that their ring is very special, and it empowers the wearer to "get out of housework".
I also discuss pearl engagement rings, and suggest that I am happy to design a pearl ring, AND an engagement ring, designed to take the wear & tear of every day life, unless they are happy with the idea that the pearl may have to be replaced.

Olga, I will check my records at work, I think I bought the white pearl from one of our local suppliers called South Sea Pearls. I am very nervous to take for granted that all their stock is South Seas, and it does have a lovely glow, which now makes me suspect FW.
The pink pearl came from Brisbane, no idea on its provenance, but it has a mate made into a pendant, and both of them are quite a variety of colours from one end to the other. Photos to follow if you want, tomorrow.

Thus our elation with this poe pipi and keshi ring. At 6.0mm, this is about as large as it gets in round for this species.

Purlgurl, the wrapping idea for those baroques is magnificent!

What great designs - Purlgurl's is very clever.
Here are a few I found -
Number 2 cradles the pearl wonderfully and very easy to wear.
The NAtural Blisters are modern and protected. No 4 & 5
The freeform in the first photo (bottom ring) is set in a gold crater very low
and reflects the luster -

Thanks so much. Yes the colour of the last natural pearl is
beautiful with thick nacre and great lustre.I can never understand why people get carried away with the "plastic fantastic cultured mabes"
when there is such a thing like this - You obviously have a great
eye for pearls "purlgurl" . For those who dont know a cultured pearl is
called a mabe a natural pearl is a blister.

Here's a unisex design I've been looking at for some time that seems to meet the criteria for proper pearl protection, even in slightly larger sizes. It would be custom made so pearl color is optional, although the intense green does look nice (Cook Islands).

Lots of it! That is stunning!!!!
I have had a few customers lately who want the settings to allow the
stone (or Pearl) to touch their finger, apparently its some kind of mystical thing, the vibrations/power transmits directly.

Suffice to say that the Poe Pipi in question has been eliminated from this concept as the pearl is too perfect (and too valuable) to drill from two sides.

Playing the piano with ring: Certainly not if playing a classic model with original ivory keys!

Hi Everyone!

New here to the forum.

South Seas are great for long wear in rings. Put one by accident in the washing machine on full cycle (hot) once and it was fine!

Keshi (SS) and freshies also wear well. I have re-threaded a strand of freshies which had been run over by a car, the clasp was squashed but the pearls were fine. Not crushed, or scratched to the naked eye.

I would not ever put an akoya in a ring, the nacre is just too thin and reacts to products really badly.

Mabe's, it depends on which type and how old they are since farmed.

Pearl rings need to be treated like any gemstone ring, not to be worn whilst gardening or cleaning...rubies, sapphs, beryls and diamonds don't like those kinds of harsh environments either...not to mention the soft metal settings!
