Would like to know what kind of pearls these are?

How long have mystery clasps been around? Anna, aren't they your patented device? I looked on the web for an article about them, didn't have the patience to wade through all the pages of sales ads...I guess I'll try again.

Totally agree that is is a very friendly, happy strand, thank you, and yes, I will love wearing it all the time, it is a kind of "beautifying strand", it makes you feel pretty and at my age, that is a very good thing.
Necklace is 16" long when stretched out., I also found on google a MM chart for round diamonds, and although these are not totally round, the one for 17.5mm shown in the picture is smaller than the largest pearls., just to give you another idea of size.
Thank you so much to all of you for your help, have owned pearls since I was a child and my mother brought back some gorgeous strands, from the Ponte Veccio jewelers in Florence, love all my pearls but had never had such an organic looking strand and really love it.

Googled who invented the mystery clasp and this came up. Do not know if this is correct or not.

In 1974 J?rg Heinz went down in jewelry history by inventing the modern exchangeable jewelry clasp. Since then a necklace, whether crafted from pearls or any other material, can be converted in no time and without the slightest effort. Thus the jewelry wearer can adapt her necklace to any fashion or occasion while the clasping mechanism remains invisible, hidden inside the clasp. The modern jewelry manufactory has long since been offering a wide variety of clasps that appeal to different types of women and meet any need that arises when it comes to adorning oneself: featuring diamonds or colored gemstones, coral or pearls and an impressive range of different shapes. The new Mystery Sphere caused a sensation at the major jewelry fairs in 2009. Equipped with an innovative mechanism it presents itself as a veritable “artist in metamorphosis”.

Thank you coco1!

I love the looks, or should I say non-looks? of the mystery clasps. Sometimes a clasp just breaks up the visual flow of magnificent pearls.

OOOPS, maybe I will call my jeweler to hold off on changing mystery clasp until I think it over., thanks.

I think the inventor of that clasp is still making them. I see a German company with a similar name at the GJX most years. I think Anna and the one who comes to the gem show are franchises. This is a slightly different mystery clasp because the pearl with the mechanisms opened from each side so any stone or pearls witht he receiving parts can be changed out.

The size of your necklace makes it rare and valuable. Think twice about doing anything to it besides wearing it often!

I will not change a thing, thank you all so much, I am going to wear it out today.

Thank you for asking, I would not dare put the subject forward by myself.
The story of JH clasp is exactly like Mikimoto's story : it is not because one said it invented it that it does ... it is a 50 years old swiss story.
At this stage I cannot resist telling about the story of clasps through ages I am writing here.

In Europe, we call it "interchangeable" rather than " mystery" , mainly because it is set both sides .
But we wear jewelry, we do not wear "mechanism" and changing is "just a plus".
I like it not only because it allows to compose a new set everyday by changing the center part of the necklace, but also because - in a way - it "free" stones and pearls from prongs and close setting.
At final IMHO, what is important is the main material, I like unusual stones and pearls first of all.
As for Sheri I can convert any strand with interchangeable setting.
See a SS strand set that way on this link on this forum

Lots of clasps can be used : taking a pearl from the strand itself to have it converted, or a hammered silver clasp or a diamond or precious stones clasp ... ah, jewelry endless passion...
Enjoy your strand any way it is set

:D

Ah unless the strand is very new (last few years, as Pattye rightly says) they would indeed be South Seas. I have had way too many experiences in seeing good freshwaters being sold as 'ocean pearls' to trust the seller necessarily is sure themselves. Once in a very high end retail store in HK, I listened intently as a sales assistant sold a multicolored strand of nucleated freshwaters as south sea.... when politely challenged (after the customer departed), the seller literally had no idea.

Enjoy your pearls - they are magnificent!

Thank you so much, I love them and I am wearing them in my shorts and T shirt as I type right now, lol. Whether Freshwater or Ocean, the oysters that produced them knew how to make a woman smile.........Loving this website, will post some of my inherited pearls shortly., and I know it probably is wrong to ask, but is there a list of recommended pearl sellers available?, if not permitted, please ignore my question.
Thank you again.

Hi
Customers can contact any seller they want. If a signature is under a post, the seller is probably OK, as members eagerly check out all new links and comment if there is anything irregular about the site. We aren't afraid to get tough, if the site warrants it.

Still the Pearl-Guide isn't in the business of recommending websites or building a list. Rather, we encourage you to learn as much as you can, because pearls are a complex topic compared to about any other gem. And there is a lot of personal preference involved.

There are good sellers who are not members here and often people will mention them here as places they like to shop. If you aren't sure about a site or a deal, post the item here and we'll look at it and the website and make comments about either or both. Try a search for a name within the P-G website. If the business was mentioned here, you can see what was said.

From looking at your pearls, I discern that you may have a case of pearl fever ready to flare up. There is no cure, but we are a good support group for managing it, as many of us have chronic cases, ourselves. Nothing like looking for more pearls to get some temporary relief.

Hit the nail on the head there, Caitlin!

Oh, my pearl fever has never gone in remission, it is definitely a chronic case. I agree, the search for more pearls is the only way to obtain temporary relief, lol.
