Where to restring in NYC?

Did the choker still fit, in roughly the same way, after adding the knots? because I'm just as curious as can be about how things turn out (knot vs no-knot), and how folks responded to the upgrade.

Interesting you should ask that, the knots definitely did add length to the final result but my style of knotting is such that my knots are really small.

The thing is, the choker's owner had gained some weight around the neck and hadn't worn the choker for some time. The knotting actually made it possible to wear the necklace again. I had to do a couple of fittings to get it right.

The worse thing about doing a choker design from real pearls is that the pearls were not perfect rounds but small potatoes and I made the silly mistake of cutting them all off without laying them out as they were originally to observe. It took hours to sort them out to sit nicely and evenly with the spacers. Luckily the owner had a few extra pearls that came when she bought the necklace and I was able to play around with the sizes a bit.

I'd find one row would be just that tiny bit longer than the other because of the slightest size variations in each pearl and this caused the choker to buckle at points.

Let's just say, I would be very pleased not to do a choker with knots again for a long time. Is it common to do this design on wire or with string but without knots? I have so very little experience with this sort of necklace having not owned one myself.

Wow, that was a truly good news - bad news situation for you the whole way! Kudos to you for your persistance.

I have no idea how to answer your last question, since I'm in the same boat you are - don't own one, and not enough experience to tell you what's the norm. I'll take a stab at it and say that the more expensive the pearls, the more likely that the choker was knotted. I think a stroll over to Google one of the links that talks about royal jewels would be in order...off I go.
