Since Chinese freshwater pearls became available about 20 years ago, there is an ABUNDANCE of inexpensive, affordable, attractive, ready to wear pearl jewelry which can be found all over the internet, in dept stores and more. Pearls are no longer only a luxury item, a pair of pearl stud earrings or pendant can easily be found for less than the cost of a pizza (less than $20). Lots of women and men know this. You now have an opportunity to educate yourself. We here at P-G forum don't know of ANYONE who is selling QUALITY PEARLS in a canned oyster. Yes, the people who are in this business often have been scammed and they are just passing on the lies and misinformation, letting people think they have something other than a $.25 pearl. This is not an honorable way to raise money, no matter how worthy the cause.

If you are looking for ways to raise money through the surprise of people opening something that is closed, why not pick up on the idea someone gave for a wedding?

Buy some strands of decent quality multi-coloured freshwater pearls and some tiny velvet purses and let people pull their pearls from a collection of purses instead.

Years ago we had a gala fundraiser for a local charity in which we partnered with a jeweler to raffle off chances to win a pair of unset diamonds. With each $25 ticket, you got two stones in an organza pouch. At the event cocktail reception, we had a gemologist with microscope on hand to examine the pairs...most were CZs but the thrill was waiting in line to receive your evaluation. The jeweler also sold settings for the CZs for an extra $25 (two pendants or a pair of studs). Everyone walked away happy. To me, that's much more of a thrill than handing someone a preserved dead animal to retrieve a crappy pearl that no one would really want.

Even though the latter describes the pearl as akoya, it's actually freshwater.

Regardless of whether you source real akoya shells and pearls, you are still perpetuating misinformation. Are you going to explain to your customers that in order for them to get their little thrill a huge volume of akoya oysters were unnecessarily killed and pickled? Surely that raises some ethical alarm bells? Are you also going to explain how unhygenic this is? There is no integrity and no honour in doing this. Don't delude yourself.

Yuck. I hope these posts stop soon. The whole thing is gross, and I do doubt the integrity of any person or company that participates in this. The biohazards filling landfills from the discarded refuse alone is enough to give one pause, not to mention the environmental impact from producing these monstrosities, the potential health hazard to those who handle them (absorbing the chemicals transdermally or through inhaling the fumes), and the scams perpetrated on unsuspecting customers. Honestly, who in their right mind would want to do this unless there was a quick and shady buck to be made? Is this the new "make $1000/week in the comfort of your own home" scam?
