What did the poor pearls do to deserve this?

Naw. They just pick 'em up from the stools.

I snort laughed at my desk. And then had to pretend I was choking on my tea.

Oh yes!!! I loved page three on that thread! Such a funny peeps! And your comment was funny too BW! Did everyone believe you were choking on your tea?

One thing about the zebra pearls - they were tiny. Someday when I run across them, I'll take a photo with something for size reference. :)

Well...:) Painting or carving pearls are not forbidden, and next, it's the matter of everyone own tastes to appreciate or not, but maybe a thing able to make some objective difference is the part of true design, or only buziness goal (sure the most often) as reason to do that.
Then, did you, please, view all these natural gems crystals, so beautiful, but cut to make jewels? It's the same way of changing natural beauty for an other look.
This matter of taste goes both ways, personally, I love raw diamonds and I am so pleased to see they are now used to be set on jewels. Nobody expected that a few years ago.

I wonder if this is that process where something is dipped in a vat where spots or swirls are on the surface. then you dip an item and the surface adheres like a skin. I remember when the zebra pearls were a thing.. forgotten all about them . They were all over ebay.

That's a good idea, Katbran, but looking at these pearls, It does rather give the impression that not only are the ink welts printed on pearls, but some brilliant and clear varnish covers them, maybe also removed from the surface like you are explaining. Unfortunatly, we can't see them in our own hands.

The zebra pearls page is hysterical!! I do like the zebra stripe pearls better that the painted splatter pearls but I don't think I would spend money on them. I think those brightly dyed garbage pearls are a horror, though. I guess they could be used for Christmas ornaments or Halloween costumes.
