Flaws in the stones. They can look like black spots, or feathers, or even ridge lines. A diamond has very characteristic refraction...if you see double images, then it's a quartz. If you see a foil backing then it is a rhinestone.
Nice baguettes like they would use in an 18K clasp was probably pretty loupe clean. Stop in some shop with a diamond tester to tell for sure, but they look like winners.
