Unexpected discovery

My husband and I cleaned out the crawlspace above our garage and found a box of stuff belonging to the previous owner (circa pre-1960s) and this stand was one of the things inside. I've tried the friction test and they are grittier than my beads, but also more smooth than my FW pearls. I'm wondering if they are gritty because they are old imitations or if they are smooth pearls that are coated with.... something? I seek the wisdom of the Pearl Gods, please.

I have to agree with @BWeaves : feels like an imitation pearl strand.

Imitations, for various reasons.
For one, it's not unusual in imitation strands to see one smaller pearl next to the clasp. I have yet to see that in a genuine pearl necklace.
But also the appearance of the surface, the uniformity of the luster / shape / size/ color, the way it's strung, the lack of overtones, the clasp....
