I've been playing around with designs for 2 tin cup necklaces and would love your input!

1. What is your favourite length for a tin cup necklace

I'm probably looking at something between 18" and 20" and was wondering for those of you with tin cups, does the way the tin cup sit result in a different preferred length compared to knotted strands.

2. What is your preferred spacing between the pearls?

I was thinking 1" to 1.5" spacing.

3. Which layout do you prefer?

A) Mix of semi baroque, drops, circled and near round pearls. Lots of crazy colours.

B) Rounder pearls only - short circled and near round. Longer, more baroque shapes removed. Some of these did have the best colours.

Thank you in advance!

Just for fun here is my layout for the second necklace. Still playing around!

I would say that for most of my tincups I prefer 1.5 inches between but 1 inch isn't too short for me at all. I usually don't do rounds and prefer short roundish baroques and circles with awesome color, but I really really like your A option better (even though it's close!). Also..the second tin cup with what looks like keshis is just a total win. I am breathless!

And it must be tin cup night..I just got through making one using short circled Tahitians from Jac!

As for length, I generally like the same lengths for tin cups as I do strands. I like both 18" and 20" lengths a lot.

Thanks Lary, that's very helpful! Yes, I'm leaning towards A too. I love the colours but just haven't seen many tin cups done with baroque shapes.

Woo!! Please share photos of your tin cup!!

Glad I could help. I adore tin cups!

I will post pictures of mine in the morning so I can get it in natural lighting. It will be interesting to photograph..it's reeeeally long. I didn't measure how long it was exactly but I'll post all that info tomorrow, too.

Hi hanadama, I like A too. Something about the mix that works well together.
Keshi looks great. Can't wait to see. I did one previously using blue mix from Jacque. But never measured the length. I just estimating on myself. Lol

I love the pearls on the second necklace! I think the distance between the pearls really depends on the size of each pearl and how you want the pearls to sit on your neck. I don't like pearls on the back of my neck so I tend to keep them focused in front on tin cups.

I have a small (5 pearl) tin cup with tiny Tahitian keshi and love the daintiness and rarity of it (makes me want a pipi like MSC's gorgeous necklace). I think I used 1.5 inches between the pearls, but it might be less. It started out with a 14" gold chain I had that was never used, and I added one pearl in the middle. I loved the look but it was still a little too short, so I added a few more pearls. It might be around 17 inches now. I'll take a photo when I get home tomorrow night. I also have a long tin cup using teardrop/oval shapes. It was about 36" (I caught it on something and broke it so it needs to be repaired  ) and I could double it if needed and hung a pearl drop on the bottom. Tin cups are great because you can do so many fun designs with them. Can't wait to see what you create!

Thanks lary, amti, kalmen & katbran!

lary & amti - looking forward to seeing photos of your tin cups!

I noticed that some of the shapes aren't showing very well in my layouts. Here are a couple of close ups!

Beautiful pearls!!! I'm in love with your keshi and the blue ones!!!

It helped me to lay my pearls on a bead board and put a pin in them so they were laying the right way (good for those who don't sit right). Or you can temporarily string them so you have an idea what it will look like worn. Also, finding a necklace that is a good length on you and using that as a gauge for your tin cup is very helpful.

Found my old post but it only shows the keshi being a solo necklace and it also shows the longer tin cup on the next page:

These old photos were taken at night using a flash, so the pictures aren't that great. I'll have to take some of the reworked keshi tincup. The pearls on the longer necklace range from 8-11-9mm and the distance between the pearls was longer so you could see the figaro design. When doubled, the largest pearls hang in the front and the longest non pearled area where the enhancer is, would lay on the back of the neck. I didn't really like the way the pearls hung on the wire when worn short, so it was mostly worn long. I loved seeing the pearls in the daytime, esp driving.

I'm going to throw a curve ball at you...in your last group of photos (#4 and #5) I would use the drops as a "dangle" tin cup. I would switch out the oval shape for a more pointed shapes in the grouping. In other words, use head pins to attach the drops to your chain and let each pearl dangle...like this: IMG_2330.jpg

I like option B the best! And I concur with everyone else, spacing depends on size of pearls when it comes to tincups, IMO. That and the overall look I'm going for with the piece.

Amti, I L-O-V-E that single keshi necklace, that right up my alley! I've been waiting for Care Ehret to offer more SOC keshi so I can do something similar. Seems like I gravitate toward tiny, dainty, unassuming or HUGE HONKING GIANT, pearls ;) The in between usually gets a meh reaction, I wonder if that'll change?

Amti the single Keshi is so delicate. Very nice!

Jp Dangles? Very interesting. As usual love your creativity.

Hadanama nope don't have a thread. Attaching pic here for you.
I initially did it longer and could go round my neck twice but I didn't like it
Inspired by JP, I re-did. Shortened and added 2 gemstone stations.
The pearls are blue mix from Jacque. They have pretty luster but were rather blemished. They were graded AA+.

My favorite length for a tin cup is 42 inches. I like to wear it long and doubled.

GAH, you guys are killing me. These are all gorgeous options.

I love my 31" blush metallic tin-cup which I nest inside a 33" baroque akoya. I know some people really like the delicate chain tin-cup as it makes the pearls look like they are floating. But personally I prefer a more textured tin-cup so I use long/short chains and flower stations.

Newberry is the queen of tin-cup and my jaw fell to my knees when I saw her various tin-cups which inspired me to make this one. I looked high and low for the long/short chains, and got the flower findings as a poor-lady's version of Newberry's glorious tri-color diamond earring converted tin-cup station.

I also have a circled peacock tahitian tin-cup in the works that I haven't had the time to execute. Again inspired by Newberry lol, I went looking for oval links to make a random textured tahitian tin-cup. The long/short oval chains are a bit more delicate - my tahitians are a bit larger so fatter oval chains will balance it out better. Will share pictures when I get a chance to make it!

I LOVE this use of the the flowers, Purr...really lovely. Can we have a neck shot please? You are so creative!!!

ETA: I agree on the fact that newberry is the QUEEN of the Tin Cup! I would love to roll around in her jewelry box for a week.
