It looks like the chain mail work that I see the medaevil re-enactors make. My son is working on his knightly skills on horseback. He wears a 40 lb chain mail tunic when he is in garb.(Society for Creative Anachronisms, or Middle Ages with lots of fun)
 
It does look like rib-knit; if it's a silver mesh bag those plates are tiny!

Ok, the neck looks like maille, the pouch looks like plates (I can't tell what metal) and the pearls are darling - did someone famous own it?

Well, I posted all the pearl jewelry in Sotheby's auction, now that's Josephine's turn to come,

Now , why do I state "Empress" when everybody is focusing of "Queen" ?
Well, on the interest not to wear same first name as famous previous ones when you are a queen :)
Here is the Queen, and this is how she wore her necklace. The portrait was sold together with the necklace.
