I like the idea of using the dead beetle - very iridescent - very natural.

Have you guys heard (seen) of the "Giant Madagascar Hissing Cockroach Brooch" - very alive. A jewel encrusted live cockroach attached to a pin with a chain.

Thanks for joining my fan club ...I actually HAVE heard about the live beetle brooch...kind of intriguing, though perhaps a bit cruel...though I guess if you feed your bug and treat it well, there could be worse things for a bug...at least the chances are diminished that it will get eaten by a bird, though that would make things REALLY interesting for the wearer, wouldn't it!?!

Hi Blaire--Lovely, unique art.

My husband, who was a biology professor, once had a colleague who wore a pin that was a live hissing cockroach on a chain. No jewels or pearls but it did keep his students awake!

I actually had a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach for a pet once. My undergraduate ecology course was taught by a visiting professor whose specialty was entomology, and at the end of the semester he asked me if I would like to keep the little fellow. He was not exceptionally engaging, as pets go, but certainly inoffensive enough. My personal opinion is that using live animals as jewelry or fashion accessories devalues them. (Of course, the pet is welcome to choose me as a perch if they so desire!)

Sorry, but the beetles and cockroaches in jewelry are not my idea of ornamental enhancements.....let the poor bugs be!

Thank you, Olga... And all of the others who have complimented my work.

And don't worry, everyone - I promise not to use any live bugs in my creations! But if they are already "expired", and not rare or endangered, I have no problems doing what I can to showcase their beauty, as in the necklace I've shown a few pages back, where the center "jewel" is an iridescent beetle. I don't think it's going to start a rush of indiscriminate beetle-hunting. In fact, it wasn't until I started working with insects that I grew to appreciate their beauty. True wonders of engineering.

OK, a couple more things I just did, rather than start working on taxes, and a question for the experts out there. I made the earrings out of some antique metal bullion tassels I got some years back at the Paris flea market. Always intended to make them into earrings, but it took the addition of some pearls to get me inspired. The earrings are accented by a pair of nice funky baroque Kamokas, and some tiny dyed freshwaters. They're quite long (almost shoulder dusters, even on me), but surprisingly comfortable.

The undulating rope is a mixture of sizes and colors of freshwater pearls, ranging from about 6mm up to about 13.5mm. I cannibalized several necklaces I've gotten over the last year or two, having come to the realization that much as I love the colors, pink and lavendar pearls do nothing for my skin tone, so much better to put them into a long rope. They are accented by a (removable) art nouveau fairy pin I got a while back on ebay. Somewhat sweeter than my usual creations, but the pastels and fairy seemed to convey a nice springtime feel.

Here's the question for the experts - do you think the largest pearls are SS, or FW? I bought them in a necklace (ranging from about 12mm up to just under 14mm) from an ebay seller who represented them as south seas pearls, but they seem to me to have a more metallic luster, and pinker overtones, than one generally sees in SS pearls. I took the strand apart because I was displeased with the quality of the surface - many of the pearls have kind of a scuffed, scratched look. The pearls are a roundish button shape, not the potato-oval you often see in large FW's. What do you think? Perhaps low-quality SS pearls with thin nacre, or bead-nuked FW's? Not that it really matters, but I'm curious to see if anyone can render an opinion without seeing the pearls in person...
