Sharpies to color string thread?

I just got my white 20 lb. Power Pro thread, so I'm ready to try knotting. I've also ordered some 7mm grey akoyas that I want to string. If possible, it would be nice to use the thread I already have. I've read a bit about coloring the thread with a Sharpie but didn't see any verdict. Okay or not?

Also, does 20 lb. sound right? And, if I can color the thread I already have, what color do you think? I thought grey but then maybe dark blue would bring out the blue in the pearls better? Thanks.

I have heard people say they tried that. However, since it is a very slippery synthetic, no color really stays put. I tried a purple sharpie and quickly got frustrated at how hard it was to color the thread evenly.

If the color is important, then go with some other synthetic thread in the correct color. They are still all stronger than silk and won't stretch. Keep the PowerPro, it may still come in handy for a variety of purposes needing strong , but thin thread that will hardly cut with regular scissors. I have to use those very sharp u shaped thread cutters to cut it at all.

I hope that detail is not new to you. if it is, I apologize. PP is seriously strong thread that only cuts on certain sharp edges like carbon steel as is in those clippers.. They can be found for under $4.

Thanks, Caitlin. Do you all think grey akoyas would look okay on white, or would you get a colored thead?

That is a matter of taste. The style now is to match color of pearl to thread. I think dark blue would be too dark, from what I know of my silver/blue akoyas, so I think white is good on these.

I am knotting some silver and blue akoyas right now, with the white PP, because If I am going to wear them, they need to be unbreakable. I hardly notice the color of the thread, but that is because I prefer the strength over color. I wanted to finish the last and longest necklace before I show it, but I can post a preview here as soon as my battery charges.

My first choice would be gray, but the 20# power pro will make very tiny knots, and be hardly noticeable. You can wear your bracelet right away, and later if you want to change out the thread for a matching color, you"ll be able to reknot it in about 15 minutes! It's surprising how inconspicuous those tiny knots are.

Thanks, Caitlin and Pattye. I guesss I'll just go with what I already have then. :)
