Pls help reassure someone that this is tahitian

Hi everyone, I have a client who has suspicions that a pair of pearls she bought from a jeweller in Singapore as tahitian may not be so. She paid $320 for a 9-9.5mm pair set in 18k gold.

The lustre looks tahitian but she is worried it is not, as the pearls don't seem gritty when subjected to the tooth test. According to her, they also make a very metallic sound (I did tell her the sounds are relative)... From the pics, do they look tahitian?

Thanks in advance.

If she bought the earrings somewhere else why are you getting dragged in? That may sound harsh but it isn't your problem Adeline

Hi
Was that post by admin a dig at me? I only meant that Adeline could more usefully have directed her client directly to the forum herself for evaluation. I thought they were indeed tahitians as well..certainly not fakes with the clear peacock effect, which i don't think has as yet been imitated.
I felt that it was a bit off for a customer to buy from someone else and then ask Adeline to evaluate the purchase. Not very tactful.

Rarely a day goes by that we don't get calls or emails from customers asking for information regarding pearls they already own or just purchased somewhere else. I always try and help when I can, its good for the industry to educate consumers, even if they aren't consuming my pearls :p

I don't mind talking about pearls either, or giving a quick comment on pearls from elsewhere.
But the implication in Adeline's post is that Adeline thinks they are tahitian but the customer has got a doubt in her head which Adeline's reassurance wasn't dislodging. The client IS tactless to involve Adeline . Anyone who buys something in one shop then immediately goes along to another one saying in effect ' I didn't come to you for these pearls but now I want your opinion on them'.
If this tactless client wasn't happy with the opinion I had given I would steer them to the guide so they can post and enquire themselves, rather than getting involved. Getting involved as a third party is never a great plan.
Thereby the information and consumer education etc is satisfied

I like that list of what Pearl-Guide.com is about.

Is it up anywhere but here?

P-G certainly is an unprecedented place to gather and talk pearl!

WOW! I don't remember reading that before! That should be plastered everywhere on the forum!!

I agree- Maybe at the top of each separate forum page or something.

It is amazing how many people don't read the rules- then do things the rules do not allow.

But this is so positive and it IS what p-g.com does.

I like that list a lot. :)
Wendy, you do have a point there. However, in the bigger picture, it does not really matter whether the customer posts here or the retailer....the purpose in this case, as I understand it, was to reassure a pearl consumer, who might have come to Adeline for advice, but needed further confirmation..

On the topic of the pearls, I'd like to practice though their identity has already been settled. I would say that they are real pearls because they are not identical.

My vote is also on real Tahitian pearls. The pearl on the right doesn't seem to be perfect round to me, it's slightly drop shape.

I also have pearls that don't pass tooth test, at least not obviously gritty like most pearls. But I know for sure they're real.

I've seen Tahitians that didn't pass the tooth test that were real Tahitians, but the reason was because they were coated. Most of the time though when someone tells me a pearl doesn't pass the tooth test that they've read about, it's because they're inexperienced.

First thing in your morning - probably tea time for us British types!

I hardly ever post as admin- that is Jeremy, usually. When anyone posts as admin, it is official P-G word. I do admin work on the admin board, as needed, but it is less needed than ever.

I have a little more to say on this subject, but will post it over on the feedback thread in Other stuff.
