Hi Richard
Yes, That is the process. I don't think they were thinking of multiple individual sales online. I do think they are experiencing a spike in orders though probably resulting in mounds of paper piling up on desks, weighed down by the inkwells. Think they are housed in an old stone castle?
At least the shipping doesn't take months. Zeide, on another thread, suggested they arrange to do an American softback edition. At least maybe they could list with Amazon.
This is a good book. It is a textbook and amazingly, even with 800 pages, an introductory text. An excellent introduction, indeed, but it leaves one craving more and deeper information.

Hi Richard

Yes I did say Pearls by Elisabeth Strack was an introductory text, but I am talking basic, but thorough.

If you read this book like the textbook it is, you will come out of it having a comprehension of the fundamentals of pearls in the following section and chapter headings:

First, 307 pages on Natural Pearls including the following Chapter headings:
a basic Historical Overview of pearls 40 pages,
a basic knowledge of Pearl-producing Molluscs 70 pages,
the Formation of Pearls 14 pages.
Countries of Origin, 10 pages
Pearls from Pinctada, 66 pages discussing Pinctada pearls from all regions of the world.
Freshwater Pearls. Over 50 pages on European and North American Freshwater Pearls.
Pearls from other Marine Bivalve Molluscs. 6 pages on unusual pearls from oysters tridacna and more.
Pearls from Gastropods, 8 pages on Abalone pearls, 7 on Conch Pearls amd 6 more pages on other interesting gastropods.
Other types of Pearls. 2 pages on ?so-called? elephant , fossil and coconut pearls
Properties of Pearls 4 pages on the physical, optical and chemical properties of pearls.
The Natural Pearl Market and Evaluation of Pearls, 5 pages on grading, peeling and drilling pearls.
Large and Famous Pearls and Pearl Objects, 7 pages on world famous pearls.

As you can see, each of these subjects is worthy of a book on its own, but you really can get a college level 101 Pearls course from this book.

Coming up in another post: Part Two: Cultured Pearls. 400 pages on what is going on with cultured pearls today and how it got that way.

I still haven't bought the book yet.

The Association fran?aise de Gemmologie is supposed to stock it but I never manager to get in touch with them. I'll try to call them tomorrow.

Try going on to Abebooks.com. A vendor called Twelfth Street
Booksellers is indicating that they have two copies in stock. Also, Ms. Strack
will be lecturing at the AGTA Gem Fair in Tucson on Feb.3. Hopefully
after that, her book will be easier to obtain.

Hi Gail and all

I plan on attending Strack's lecture here in Tucson a week from Saturady. It is free and it will be in the AGTA show ate the Tucson Community Center, which means the parking will be dreadful.

I will ask about it. I would take mine in for a signing but it is so darn heavy and I don't want to lug it for hours, cuz the parking is so far away. Hmmm, maybe I will take a suitcase with wheels....

Anyone have any questions, comments I can relay?

Thinking about flying in for the same seminar and then taking a 'pearl walk' with Jeremy Norris shortly thereafter.

Hi Jeremy
Shepherd meets Strack.... I am glad I will be there to see it. Cool.

Caitlin,

please ask Elisabeth if there is to be another book planned with more and newer information on pearls... newer treatments, different kinds of treatments, You know, everything we use to discuss on the Forum, etc.

It would be fabulous if someone could tape the lecture or provide a transcript!!! Thanks so much for thinking of that. I'm in agony because I have a conflicting show and can't go to Tucson this year.

I'm thinking about going to the Tuscon show and to the Strack lecture.
I enjoyed Tuscon, last year.
