There is no doubt whatsoever that Phillip II gave La Peregrina to his bride, Mary Tudor.

What was questioned was the difference in appearance between modern photos and the von Doshorst(sp?)portrait.

By doing a little - what did you once call it- tertiary research? :D - on the web, a surprising number of photos of the pearl have already collected on this forum.

It should be interesting to figure out all portraits of this pearl, likely to be based on sittings (rather then copies, versions etc.).

Found a better version of the one of Queen Mary I by Hans Eworth: it shows the same jewel with ... an elongated drop pearl: LINK

The British National Portrait Gallery may hold more such things. I haven' went very systematically about this... yet.
