This topic has always fascinated me. Of course, there's a long history of pearls with India's erstwhile kings and queens, but today too pearls (usually the smaller sizes) form part of Indian jewellery designs.

I do have some designs on my Indian jewelry website, but these are all costume pearls, although the designs are very Indian and are used with real pearls and gold as well. Here costume pearls are used with gold plated zinc and plastic/glass beads.....thought this would be fun to share here :)

Hi Amrita,

The pieces are wonderful! Inspirational too!! Is it possible also for you to put the photos up? And also have a link to that store?? That way it is preserved here for posterity!

Hi Amrita,
I have several friends who collect and wear Indian jewellery and I adore it.

Amrita,
Haven't spoken to you in awhile, hope you are well. I enjoyed looking at the Indian jewelry, very unique. Thank you for sharing:)

Very interesting. Indian jewelry hasn't come my way much. Thanks for sharing those.

Amrita - I love Indian jewellery.... have fond memories of shopping with a friend years ago in Delhi.. I was too gobsmacked by the pieces to think clearly! I do love the pieces you have shown... thank you.

The previously mentioned friend gave me a beautiful book on Indian jewelry for a birthday gift once - still treasured.

Of course, Pattye! The link is www.myindiastop.com, and this is actually my own Indian jewellery online store! This is another website that has taken ages to set up plus quite a bit of work. All pictures are mine, as is the text.

There are many pieces here, but not all of them use costume pearls.

Here are some photos:

Enjoy!:)

I LOVE those, one can see how the Indian influence carries over into our beading today---the gold roundels, pearls, of course, pearls mixed with gems and lovely tassel-type pendants with dangles--------------

I have a number of jewelry pieces in my personal collection which were made in Jaipur, all bezel set gems (some pearls) in silver. Now that I can "do" jewelry, making extenders to use with them so they are wearable again is a great winter project!!

Hi all! Thanks for your comments.
Am just clarifying again that this is all costume or imitation jewelry. Wouldn't want people to be confused or misled! :)

They look really good, whatever they are :)

DK :)

Just a couple more Indian pearly designs to add to this thread...:) Again this is all costume jewelry....not real pearls. But I thought you might enjoy looking at these unusual handmade creations..:) Sorry the pictures are not more uniform in size.

cheers

Hi Amrita! I've studied Indian jewelry extensively (since I have to wear it a lot) and have never seen pretty designs with pearls like yours. They are nice and light. A friend returned from Gujarat with some nice square pendants (hung on the diagonal) with rubies and emeralds and diamonds, really really nice, and a pearl necklace would have been perfect for them. Thanks for showing them!
