I also got this book from Rio Grande. I had first inquired with GIA though and they were not carrying it. But, recently I actually received an email from Elisabeth telling me that GIA has decided to carry it again. I am guessing she saw my inquiry with the GIA. These are the details from GIA:

I got mine last month, and thought I would finish it in about a month. Even though I am a keen student this book is going to take 6 months at least to finish! I paid $160 CDn for it (including postage) but it is the most exhaustive book I've ever seen on the subject of pearls.

My contact at the "Pearls" publisher in Germany is Judith Wagner. Her email address is j.wagner@rdv-online.com. It takes several days to two weeks to receive a reply, but she's very nice and helpful. The book costs about 103.30 in euros, or approx $149.00 US if you include the cost of Air Mail shipping.

I used my MasterCard to pay in advance, and the whole transaction went smoothly. I had the book in about two weeks after payment. Here's the publisher's name, address, and other contact info. When you order, it's best to specify that you wish the English-language version of the book.

The publisher is the best choice. Thanks for posting the info.

Folks can also try the GIA which has been off-again, on-again and Rio Grande which had it in 2008.

As Effisk says "Thou shalt read the book". For the price of a very good strand of CC freshwaters, it is worth it.

I got frustrated trying to find a copy to buy (did not have the information in this thread when I was looking), so I requested a copy through my county library's interlibrary loan service. The book was here in a couple weeks. I have it for a month with renew options.

Yes, inter-library loan is a great way to get the book. Glad my post may be helpful, too.

Strack's detailed descriptions of mollusk biology underscore the importance of sustainable pearl farming. Mollusks' natural water-filtering abilities is beneficial to the environment, but waste build up from hundreds of them can choke a small pearl farming pond.

How to harness their beneficial effect and still create a profitable farm...?

Its too bad that the publisher is doing such a poor job of marketing Elisabeth Strack's book. It truly is the best thing since Donkin,

Donkin, R. A.., Beyond Price; Pearls and Pearl-Fishing: Origins to the Age of Discoveries. American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia, 1998, 1st edition.

In fact Strack and Donkin together make up the most comprehensive treatment of any gemstone, a pretty comprehensive library on pearls in two volumes. Donkin is a bit better on history, but Strack is more up to date.

The publisher is truly doing Ms. Strack a disservice.

I completely agree. The book is nearly impossible for people to find or purchase. I would add it to the top three I've read, including Donkin and Kunz & Stevenson.

I am interested in purchasing the book Pearls by Elisabeth Strack. I went on to the German publisher's site but can not tell if the book is in English or German. If anyone knows of a good current source, please let me know. I would think that any gem training program would have this as a textbook!
