New course on cultured pearls

Jeremy-

I have a question regarding the certificate. Will CPAA have designation requirements like the GIA, in other words protocol about the use of the term Certified Pearl Specialist per any CPAA guidelines. If I missed this some where my apologies.

I took the quiz just for testing because of the comments, and indeed there was some glitch I couldn't press the check button

Thank you guys for making this course!!! I have been taking it when i can while onboard trains in Norway and Denmark, most of the quizzes were not up yet, so I'll have to go back and redo them. I need to sit down and do the rail side of it. I have learned so much and it has made me more confident in purchasing and collecting pearls =) Again thank you so much!!!! I also have told some of my friends who have always been interested in pearls but have been shy to buy due to knowledge and what they have seen at retail stores. You might get some customers soon ;)

There are currently no protocols in place. Eventually there may be, but this is brand new territory for the CPAA.

You might find some glitches here and there in the course. As the comments come in, edits are happening in real time. What I suggest is clearing your browsers and/or using a different browser such as chrome. Over the past day, the site has had a lot of people on it, so it could be getting overloaded too, but last night I upgraded the hosting plan. Hopefully that will eliminate most of them.

If any one here didn't sign up during the beta phase and needs a coupon code, I've posted one here.

I was just thinking..... If the quality of pearl knowledge is enhanced by this course, there should be many more people who can talk about pearls intelligently, with each other and with pearl experts, starting with forum members. This alone will show people who has pearl knowledge, perhaps the book learning part is even better than theirs', though they still have the only hands-on pearls recognition course.

Thinking about it, I learned most of my pearl-recognition skills through photos on P-G! Eventually, I have seen real life examples of each type- but I already knew what they were from practicing recognition skills on P-G. I still like to do it, but I wait until a bunch of other people have had their say.

Remember the very first freshadama/akoya comparison photo Jeremy put up? I love it when people ask for pearl ID's over here- it is such a good time to practice and argue your point in a post. Sometimes, people like Anna @Cliclasp have posted guessing games with antique pearls she photographed in various museums and shows.

What I love the best are the freshwater pearls posing as naturals - boy have we had some go-rounds on those!

I hope CPAA members who take the course will sign up for P-G, too.

Jeremy might dislike me saying this (as I know his mentor was a part of the GIA coursework) but its only my opinion. I enjoyed the course you guys designed together way more than the G.I.A course...I finished the GIA course long ago and never bothered to even mention it here (I don't remember telling you guys anyway), and I am G.I.A alumni so its no disrespect to G.I.A :). I learned way more here just reading through really old posts and somewhat engaging with regulars than I did in the GIA course. Don't get me wrong I think the G.I.A course is okay...but I was expecting so much more. I hope the CPAA course is a new door to pearl education, I'm supporting it! Already blogged about it. I can see the flexibility with the CPAA course and I think that is fantastic and "Modern"!!!!

No, I totally get that. In Doug's defense, the GIA dumbed down the course as it was originally written so it wouldn't be over the heads of average students. I read some of the earlier drafts in peer review and I thought it was fantastic.

Right on Jeremy as long as I wasn't completely offensive . It really was an okay course...sorry G.I.A felt the need to strip it down, that shows lack of confidence in the those of us that appreciate the more scientific side of gemology, but that is G.I.A for you (sigh). Okay enough said I will get myself in trouble with them eventually LOL

I finished! I really enjoyed the sections on South Sea pearls. I find that I have a new appreciation for my pearls.

A round of applause for the teams that put this together. Nice job!

I restarted the course in order to enjoy all the new stuff that's been added - it's really great! Wonderful work!

Finished the course and emailed Bo. I think the course is fantastic! User-friendly, easy to understand, interesting videos and photos, and informative yet fun. Kudos to those who were part of making it.

One question though:
The course says the silver blue overtone is unique to SSPs, but doesn't it occur too in akoyas?

In valuing Akoya, why the Aurora Effect found in hanadama akoyas is not (yet) included in the course?

Pareltje - Jeremy mentioned a few times that this course is a work in progress and definitely not exhaustive of all the topics one can cover in pearls yet. Topics will be added continuously and the course evolves and grows.

I think the course at it's current stage is already amazingly done, super impressed! And of course BIG CONGRATS on the team for 500+++ registration already so quickly, and a huge thank you to everyone who put in so much work to put the course together!

That's good news, Purr :)
I'm super enthusiastic about the course and I really hope this course has the same level with GIA or even better. And yes, I appreciate the hard work put in this course to make it the way it is now. Congratulations to the team for the success! thumbs up!

Just finished the course - it was excellent! Thanks so much to the team for putting together such a great resource, I really enjoyed it.

I just started the course today and will be doing sections of it gradually. I'm loving it so far, except I didn't know I'd be tested at the end of each chapter. I better start taking notes! lol! I am really enjoying the questions and answers at the bottom of each section, too. Thank you Jeremy and everyone else who made this course possible.

Full of really wonderful information, I appreciate how it outlines the history in such a way as to tie it all together into a coherent story, rather than the bits and pieces of knowledge I had before. Thanks to all who worked to put it together!
