anyone know the name of that new pearl book that's coming out? Cortez pearls had a copy at the booth in Tucson.

I don't remember the title, author or publisher! But I think Enrique said it's coming out in the fall.

thanks
julie.

Gee, I'd like to know too. One can't have too many pearl books! ;)

Hubert Bari just finished writing a new pearl book. He is sending me a copy now. I don't know if this is the same book, but it should be here in a few days.

If that is the one, according to Amazon, it's due to be released September 14, 2010.

"Pearls" by Hubert Bari & David Lam. Hubert Bari gave us a copy at Doha...great book. Amazing photos. A book for all pearl fans...not just for those with a PhD in Gemology or Biology: comprehensive and written in an entertaining way as well. Very complete information on "the other pearls": melo-melo, conch, scallop, mussels, etc... which is information that is hard to find on published media.
Haven't been able to finish it...need more time to absorb its information, but we highly recommend buying it.

Ken Scarratt of GIA Bangkok stopped in Seattle last evening and had his preview copy of Pearls with him. Ken worked extensively with Bari on the book, which is the accompaniment to an unprecedented pearl exhibition currently on display in Qatar.

It's an incredible book from what I was able to see over dinner. Even includes a beautiful short section on Nautilus pearls that attempts to go beyond speculation?although not 100% convincingly.

September is a long time to wait!

Pearls accompanies and documents the pearls Bari collected and curated for the Qatar exhibit (a position from which he was promptly fired as soon as the finishing touches were applied!). So quite specific.

Caitlin, I wish I could say that was a Nautilus pearl, but I fear it's not. There are severe problems, note my post at Nautilus Pearls. Bari's 'Nautilus' pearls were sourced over a year ago based upon anecdotal provenance ('the diver said so'). A lot of research, primarily here at Pearl-Guide, has taken place since. A year ago, GIA's Ken Scarratt was quite positive about having pinned down the Nautilus, and was on the verge of releasing a definitive monograph on the subject. So much doubt and controversy surfaced that the monograph was withdrawn from publication and is still awaiting definitive scientific support. My rather obsessive quest over at Nautilus pearls has resulted from an intense desire to fill in the blanks AQAP.

Bari's chapter on Nautilus pearls, also containing basic factual errors regarding Nautilus biology, is unfortunate given the book's beauty (thanks in large part to Christian Creutz's excellent photography).

My ears are perking up another pearl book for the Bookshelf. I am in agreement with GemGeek on this one there can never be too many pearl books. Amazon.com pre-order here I come!

Just to clarify a little.... Bari thinks that one is a nautilus- or else, what might it be?
This goes to the very crux of the controversy, as there is nothing as yet even remotely substantiated scientifically on Nautilus. The inclusion of Nautilus in this book would have been irresistibly tempting, but was premature. LINK

My Copy of this book came today! Excited and looking forward to the read!

Cheers
