Was recently given this beautiful red abalone pearl from a family member.
Any idea of where to find out its value?
Wanted to get an idea before deciding on what to do with it.
weighs 8.66grams
and is aprox
35mm x 18.5mm x 13mm
Feedback and ideas are much appreciated.
Thanks
Abalone

shape wise its a great piece for jewelry so if you or someone around you likes jewelry i should deff get something nice made out of it

value wise its whatever people might give for it i would pay around 300 to 700 usd what would be normal if i look at current auctions etc only the moment you need one from a retailer he will charge thousands so price wise these are quite hard pieces to estimate insurance value would also be a couple thousand i guess

if you make a picture outside with day light and a piece of white paper under the pearl and above for reflection the color might come up a little bit more its quite hard to see now

Here are a few more pics.

How nice to receive that! That is a pretty abalone pearl.

Abalone pearls are tough enough to put in a ring and wear it a lot. I think this one would make a good ring. Or pendant.

Abalone,

Welcome. Very interesting pearl. As Daniel suggested, please give us a few more photos against plain white background, showing both sides. That helps show the true color.

Here are a few more.
It is really dificult to get a picture that shows all its luster.
Not to mention this pearl is rather slippery and wants to jump out of your hand.
The more I take pictures of this pearl the more likely I will keep it.
The story behind the dive, the pearl, the original red abalone shell, all make for a great tale of family history. The dive log is rather interesting and is very detailed with the sex of the abalone and where the pearl was found.
Now to work with a local jeweler to design the right setting. I am leaning more for a pendant as it is the perfect size.

I agree with Caitlin & GemGeek...definitively a Pendant, trying to use the setting to hide the brown area and to protect it from damage as well. Beautiful pearl!
