Multi-Strand (3 or more) Necklace Challenge!

How did you attach the strands to the clasp?

Cecilia

Thanks Cecilia, here's a picture that should help to answer your question :)

Cecilia,

There is a small piece of coiled wire that covers the thread and goes through the loop on the clasp. It's called gimp, bullion, french wire. Pearl Dreams tutorial here has some close up photos of exactly how this is done. I have to take my time doing this part, as it can be a little "fiddley" since one is working with such a small piece of gimp. Does that help?

Amrita, did you do all the work on this necklace yourself, knotting and gimp, or did a design assistant do the actual construction? I hope you don't mind my asking. You mentioned "we kept them (the strands) on the table side by side......."

Absolutely love your necklace Amrita - the colours are fabulous!

Here is my submission for the multi-strand challenge.
I have been thinking about a doing a necklace like this and the challenge motivated me to do so. The necklace to me looks good and the way I wanted it, but after wearing it at this length, I think it need to be shorter (the last photo shows why). The necklace is done with beading wire, 3-4mm dyed green and white oval 10mm white CFWP, beads cones, large spring clasp and some wire. One of the challenges was that I initially wanted 5 (doubled = 10) strands of green pearls, but could only fit 8 into the cone. The green pearls each are 24" long and the white 16" in total the necklace is 22" long, but I think 16-18" would be better.
Anyway, it was fun to try something different.

HI Patty and Amrita

Thanks for the info. I couldn't quite see in the original photo. Bullion certainly is fiddly stuff!

i need a design assistant! i am not going to get my assignment in on time, teacher(s). :( however i did use up the rest of my energy for the day on the tahitian photo documentary, so i do feel like i've done something worthwhile today. :) plan to finish multistrand over the rest of the long weekend. will post.

Amrita - those colours are beautiful! Really very striking! And thanks for explaining your methods. It's always good to hear how people assemble things, I wing it so often when I'm doing something new that I'm never sure if it's going to work lol I like the look of that clasp as well is that magnetic or does it slide in or both :) Really very very pretty..can't get over the lovely colours. Well done! (as usual)

KarinK - love that antique clasp and thanks for showing us the final result. I find trying to get the lengths right so tiresome on these multi stands items. Inevitably I think I've covered all the bases only to have one suddenly appear to be about 2 centimetres longer that it should be once it's finished. Not a problem with your bracelet I see :) That has turned out beautifully ! Both of them are lovely! (I never would have had the patience to string those tiny tiny pearls! )

I am admittedly cheating by adding something I made some time ago, but here goes...

Freshwater pearls, some encased in mesh tubing, fine silver findings I made using PMC, base metal chain, sterling clasp.

That's quite ok, Juliebeth, I'm in the same boat as you. Had Grandkids duty at last minute, but will post photos soon. And a few others mentioned they wanted to includes their necklaces, so I hope this thread is one that will be added to in the future.

Yes, wouldn't a design assistant be lovely!

Very cool necklace! If you get a chance could you zoom in on the findings you made..I've never tried PMC but it looks pretty interesting! And is that a metal mesh or something else? Very unusual and creative, I love it!

Here's a closeup of the PMC piece - simple texture embossing on a rolled-out sheet, cut to form. Construction of the necklace was pretty basic - softflex on the smaller strands, crimped at the end where they attach to the silver (with crimp cover beads covering the smashed crimp beads), and the soft nylon mesh tubing was fine enough that I could simply thread through holes and knot.

Love the close-up of the silver art clay pieces. I've always loved that style of necklace where two or more strands break off to drape across.

I've had a special multi-strand necklace in mind, but I have decided that I just don't have the oomph to work on it now. I found out yesterday that my favorite cat, Cleveland, has terminal lymphoma. It has beat all the energy and joy out of me. My little orange boy. <sigh>
