That is Amazing! I am surprised jadeite holds it's own so well against the intense color of the melo melo. I thought it might be tsavorite when I first saw the piece. Thanks, Cliclasp!

so many pearls, so little time

Truly awesome! Not just the color of the melo melo, or the sheer number of pieces, but the matching and the design.

Someone said on this forum awhile back, something like, For the number of pearls I have and want, I need a more interesting life.

I've been sitting here trying to imagine where I could wear something like that and coming up with pathetic answers like the Academy Awards. I guess if you are royalty you'd have lots of opportunities to display such a wonderful piece.

I've heard melo melo can fade. Anybody know if that's true? How do you keep them safely in that case?

(Please don't anybody be offended by my reference to the Academy Awards. I am in no way saying they are pathetic, just that if I could afford such a piece of art I'm sure I'd have places to wear it!)

Incredibly rare and beautiful, both the pearls and the design. Also appreciate leveling the playing field here vs. some of the fine conch pieces posted. Like conchs, I do believe there is a sunlight discoloration issue with melo-melo?not sure if that also applies to photo flash and TV broadcast illumination at the Academy Awards?

Who has the story on this piece? And why when I read the words Melo Melo does Donovan run through my head? "They call me Melo Melo."

From Sotheby's catalogue:

"DESCRIPTION
The necklace composed of fourteen graduated melo pearls, decorated with waves of brilliant-cut diamonds and jadeite cabochons, length approximately 420mm, pendant detachable; and a pair of pendent earrings and ring en suite, clip fittings, the melo pearls measuring approximately 14.25 x 5.44 to 22.13 x 14.99mm, the diamonds altogether weighing approximately 6.15 carats, mounted in 18 karat blackened gold, signed. (3)

Accompanied by a signed box"

I think it would be possible to dig some more information.

I remember it as :
they call me melo yellow
from that singer :)
nice song from the late 60' or 70'

The house belongs not only to the one who lives in but also to one who looks at.
Don't worry about having it, isn't it fantastic just knowing it exists, and that a jeweler was inspired enough to make such a beauty with the pearls ??

About fading, yes it does, it is a " winter" or " evening" jewel, ;)

True, true. It is just a treat to even lay eyes on the photos - thankyou! I didn't know these beauties existed!

OMG! OMG! OMG!

I hate to sound so uneducated, but OMG... What I wouldn't give to handle it for just 15 minutes! What a gorgeous work of Art...

I don't think I have ever seen anything like that. The colors are great together. Its a very interesting piece. Thanks for sharing.

The homogeneity of the melo-melo color is astonishing. I'm assuming from the price that certification was done that no dyes were used. Does anyone know? For a high-value piece, in melo-melo as with emeralds, using dyes tempts many a seller. The more orange and the more even the color, the higher the value of a melo-melo. Patches of white like on the 83ct one I own definitely reduce its value. If entirely natural, I'd say the buyer of the set got a major bargain at less than a million dollars!

Hello PG friends,
It is so rare to come across such a pearl :
I have about one hundred catalogues and it is only the second time it occurs to have one for sale.

So if you have nothing special to do next wednesday, it is for sale in Monte Carlo ;)
see picture and enjoy : 79,88 carats, isn't cute !

A necklace and flowers and all for less than a million. Cool.

Speaking of flowers, then: here's another - allegedly the largest conch pearl. Scroll down, then click on the picture for a larger version.

That pearl is quite something, of course, but then, some versions with 'mere' cultured pearls are none the worse: Yvel turns in grand ones regularly...

Anna, I always knew I had a soft spot for magnolia blossoms! Wow!

The Yvel bead nuc FW with handcrafted gold nuggets are pretty terrific too.. thank you again - you always come up with the most amazing photos for us to drool over..

ASHLEY! You posted EXACTLY what I was about to post!

for the record OMG! ...

would be great to have an ultra close-up of some on those pearls though... I wonder how long it took to gather/ assemble them... I mean, uhmm yeah... what's their story...
