Lop Nors found!

@BWeaves, ancient history on this forum. From 2006 or so. A former member claimed to have naturally red pearls called Lop Noors (and a bunch of other BS.)
There's a whole chapter about her in Tears of Mermaids.

These Loop Noors are a hilarious blast from the past! 😂

She withdrew (booted more likely) in disgrace right around the time I joined. Some of her comments were far fetched, but her science was preposterous on pretty much every level.

Too bad too, because she had a fiery reverence and quite the hoard of pearls. Had she channelled that into something meaningful (early YouTube etc.), she might have done quite well.

So back in about 2005 I was sure I had found some genuine Lop Noors on eBay, temp strung, tucked them away. Found and knotted last year!
Not quite red, but bright copper-rose, green halo on most, excellent luster! Small freshwater! Have a good laugh on me! 🤣

Gorgeous pearls!

Ok so ….. as you can imagine from my handle, I pretty immediately went looking for pearl books after becoming pearl obsessed. I picked up some used books and have been very slowly making my way through them. When I recently watched the retirement live with Jack Lynch and saw “Pearls: A Natural History” in his background, I felt pretty good about that choice. But the book I packed with me for my current trip was “Tears of Mermaids.” Pretty immediately I was turned off by the general vibe and author’s style. There was some misogynistic comparison I remember thinking would make it to print today. By the time I got to the part where I started recognizing names, I almost did a spit take of my beverage of choice. I knew this book was probably as bad as it appeared to be.

I did not do my librarian due diligence to vet this book before purchase …. But I’m a medical librarian, give me a break! Recreational reading is not my professional area of expertise (not since some of my courses in library school 😂). I had a good laugh after doing a search for the book title on this site.
