Wow! This has been very educational to me! Thanks to all of you.
I'm no longer going to pooh-pooh my mother's assertion that they're from the south sea. I'm also going to look into getting a clasp that is worthy of the dignity of these pearls. I always wondered about that clasp - not gold, not silver and with a not-very-lustrous "pearl" glued on it.
I really am tickled that there are others who can see the charm of these irregular beauties. I'm also very grateful that these crossed my path, who loves pearls in all their idiosyncratic forms, instead of someone who would just thrown them away because they were haphazardly thrown into a ziploc bag.
