This is a pearl ring that I added to another thread a while back. Think it was KiwiPauls's thread. Sorry Paul :)

I was asked for better photos and so decided to start a thread for it. It is a beautiful pearl - in an antique setting with some old diamonds. I love it. My favourite. But then I have many favourites. :) I hope to keep this one and do intend to send it for X-rays and certification before too long with my other best pieces.

These photos taken in daylight. I have loads of photos of it and may add the others if anyone wants. For some reason this was the easiest to take decent photos of.

I will add the size soon (it is app 9 x 8mm) - as I mentioned in another thread - I put my tray of pearl rings away somewhere safe. Too safe and now I can't find them :( I know my dogs did not pinch them so they are somewhere ??. I will dream on it and hopefully that safe place will come back to me.

Wow Dawn, you have accumulated some magnificent antique jewelry, all the more special because they feature such interesting pearls.

I'm out of my depth to know what sort of pearl it is.

However I know a bit about dating antique jewelry by the construction and materials.

Did you work out what the white metal is (silver or platinum)?

That would help date the ring. Again it looks very old to me.

I'm thinking mid-Victorian with those rose cut diamonds which would mean the white metal would be silver.

Hi Paul and all,

The Yellow Gold reads as 17kt and the white metal is reading 17kt White Gold Paul. Doesn't make any sense to me as I really believed it was silver. Before Barry cleaned the Pearl and polished the gold it looked like silver too. I did believe Victorian but can't date them as well as you. I got him to double check it and triple check as he didn't realise there were diamonds in it. I am still wondering if he hit diamonds and the yellow gold because there is not much white metal, gold or silver. If it was platinum it would have showed up as it is a good digital checker.

Please let me know what you think.

Thank you all. It is very lovely. The most luscious pearl I have ever owned. I don't think I could ever bear to sell it.

I just looked at Kari's site with the huge Pteria penguin - was actually looking regarding my black pearl but one side of her pearl looks very much like my pearl - http://www.karipearls.com/certified-pteria-penguin-pearl-17-ct.html - they can be very beautiful can't they. I have looked at Kari's pearl in the past and lusted over it. My pearl measures 9.63 x 9.03mm by app. 8mm deep.

I really have no idea what my pearl is. :)

When I start my thread in Show Us Your Pearls I will add more photos of this pearl ring along with others.

That is one gorgeous ring! I can see why you can't bear the thought of parting with it.

Most interesting that it is white gold. That effectively dates the construction of the ring to the 1920's at earliest, see:
https://www.rubylane.com/blog/White-Gold-is-Not-Antique

Of course jewelry get re-modelled all the time, as the younger generation re-style the jewels they inherit to be "up-to-date", so the pearl and diamonds could've come from an earlier piece.

Did you get the ring in Australia or from overseas?

Thanks Paul, I got the ring from overseas but can't remember which country.

I really thought it was silver and still wonder if the prongs on the tester is hitting the yellow gold. It seems strange to me that both would test as 17 kt too. I will have to try the tester tomorrow when there is good light and I can make sure prongs from both wires are on the white metal.

I agree pieces can be remodelled by this looks Victorian and before polishing it had the look of silver. Gold doesn't tarnish even lightly. So I am confused. :(

It is all about the pearl but still I would like to know for sure about the age of the ring.

Just thinking about when I bought it and I think it was in American dollars. But which country means little these days with shops online especially eBay. Items go round and round the world.

It's a beautiful ring ! thank you for sharing. This pearl has amazing colors and I keep coming back to it.... My heart skipped a bit when I read you misplaced your Ring's tray ! did you find it again ?
Sophie

Hello Sophie, yes I found it late (actually early morning) last night. It is not the first time I have misplaced valuable pearls. I have 37 storage containers with up to 20 little drawers in each so if I pop a drawer back in the wrong place it can take me a while to locate it. Luckily I had just put it to containers up. I have them in bookshelves.

Thanks for asking. I have some more pieces to share although I think this is my best.

That's good news ! Can't wait to see more of your treasures !! I'm trying to picture 37 X20 trays and my head is spinning :)
I follow you on ebay, and the new necklaces you listed last week are so beautiful. The luster is incredible !
It's a pleasure - and an education - to read your posts !
Thank You !
Best,
Sophie

Can't believe I missed all your recent rings Dawn! The colours on this are lovely! (and I'm dying for that little black one you have too, but again, there are a lot of items in your shop I covet! Lol). Just curious if they give a discount when you submit more than one item for identification? (is it GIA?)
