GIA report

Hi guys;

I just got GIA report on my 3-strand necklace. The weight is 70.8 gm. It has 295 pearls, predominantly natural pearls, but with few cultured pearls. I am wondering where do I go to sell it. Do you recommend Christie's or ebay? I don't know however how much to offer it at. Any advice? This is the necklace I posted pictures on few weeks ago.

I would think with the certification you would do better with Christies. It would be helpful if you could post the photos here again, since they were on a different thread and not relating to your pearls. That way the info will be together.

That is a lovely piece. Love the luster and baroque pearls! Rather wish they had said just how many cultured pearls there are. Probably with that many naturals the value would be significant, no idea how much, as I am not an appraiser. Buyers on ebay are looking for bargains. With certification now in hand you best contact Christies.

Any comments, GemGeek? Any idea why they didn't specify exactly how many cultured pearls on the necklace? Or diagram which are cultured? That seems odd to me.

Christies would be more interested if they were round or if they were large baroques. Bonhams would be the most likely to take it and to make some money for the seller.

A pearl report that covers strands only includes so much information for one price. You would have to pay a lot more to get pearl-specific information. That would be the same, no matter the lab.

I agree with Pattye that reports like these leave much to be desired. Partly the problem begins at the time of submission, at which one should specify exactly how the report should be done, i.e. mark the cultured pearls, please. In that way, someone can gradually replace them with similar naturals, which dramatically enhances value. Any buyer will have the same question.

At this stage, I recommend calling GIA to see if they can reconstruct some diagram of which pearls are cultured and which are not. I have asked for specificity in the past, and been satisfied with GIA reports which followed. But if you do not request, you will get information that lacks enough detail for the marketplace.

Isn't it possible that the cultured pearls are suspected keshi pearls?

What would you think about removing the pearls that look like they don't belong (they're the very modern-looking, larger pearls at the front of each strand) and restringing the remaining pearls?

Could one tell by a survey of the drill holes which pearls are modern? Perhaps the older naturals would have a bit softer looking edges because of age and wear?

I'm still learning, and these questions popped up.
