they mention a mikimoto practice:
"Tiny sensors are installed in live oysters that can detect when they are starving of air. When they open and close their shells at an increased rate an alarm sounds and the oysters are towed to cleaner waters."

is this sort of monitering common? how high-tech is your average pearl farm?

That thing about tiny sensors is funny. I wonder where the writer got her information for a lot of the article.
 
She is the jewellery editor of English Vogue. I suspect, from the content, from a couple of PRs...(paspaley and miki)
