Calling pearl pros - Strange baroque SSP

I would love to get to Bali but can't convince John...might have to head out on my own! Sven that is a truly lovely piece of shell/pearl art. The colours are quite amazing. I'm so sorry to hear you lost so much merchandise, when I read that you'd been robbed I didn't realize that they almost took the whole place! Dreadful..and then with the corruption issues on top of it all...very happy that things are coming good again. I just ordered a bit to help the cause :) ..not that 30$ is going to help much... :p

Adeline, what a terribly sad story. That poor girl. Devastating for her family and then to know that you are never going to have justice would be frustrating.

Kat you must, you must!! And what's John into? There's something to interest everyone on/ in Bali - you can rough it out amidst nature or you do Bali chic, all slick and modern (coz fom what I remember you did stay in a chi-chi place in HK). Ask Sven! Or ask me. And to top it off, Lombok is a hop and skip away where the golden SSP farms beckon. Does this get your attention now, Kat :)

As for the other matter, well, she's better now, but I think the grief and the lack of closure does get to her every now and then.

the problem is that John thinks that Bali is full of drunken, tattooed Australian tourists in loud shirts and rubber flipflops, a place where he will be attacked by mobs of locals trying to sell him "rubbish" or make him a cheap suit..this would be his worst nightmare. He's not exactly a relaxed , easygoing guy...he's happiest in slightly more controlled environments...that's why I booked where I did in HK. I figured if I was ever going to get him to go back there, I needed it to be a space where he would be comfortable. And he had a good time, he would consider returning, so my plan worked :) Bali...I'm gonna have to go it alone...tho if I mention a golden SSP farm he'll probably come to keep an eye on the purchases!

Did somebody mention Lombok ?

Pearldar just went off the scale.........

Katbran, you just need to not go to Kuta. We've stayed in Sanur twice, and it is both lovely and peaceful. And it can get a lot more off-beat than that. I haven't been to Bali in over 10 years, but I still dream about going back to the amazingly green color and the beautiful people.

Sven, look what you have done to us! We are all Bali (and Lombok... one day, think golden SSPs) fans! So far I've covered Ubud (centering), Jimbabran Bay (the bay says it all), Kuta (bacchanalian and budget), Legian (upmarket), Seminyak (stylish) and some of these twice.

And I love the Indonesians and I'm fortunate to have had some in my household for over two decades now.

Kat, Karin's right. I remember in high season, the Scandinavians will descend upon the island and bask in the sun for weeks on end. There are fascinating resorts in Uluwatu (google "Alila Villa Uluwatu" - an aquaintance was the architect, for example, or "Four Seasons Ubud" or "Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay") far from the madding crowd and even more maddening drunken Aussies on their schoolies. Bali is to Aussies, I guess, what Ibiza and Corfu is to the TOWIE crowd. (Aside to our British PG friends: Just where do the Sloanes go apart from the ski slopes?)

As for the itinerant peddlers, like Karin says, no, no, mostly only in raucous Kuta where commercialism is rampant. I personally love Ubud (hills). Very relaxing. I've brought my (then) babies along on these trips from as young as 6 months. For the price of HK, in Bali you get a spring-fed private pool and villa on the edge of the River Ayung with views of rice fields.

Feeling Bali now ;) ?

Don't do that, Adeline! :) I want to go back! We had Gustav along as a 7 month old baby. We hardly saw him. The staff would "abduct" the big blond baby where ever we went. Locals stopped us to ask the age of him. When we said 8 months they looked at us in wide eyed wonder and said "Huuuuge!"

LOVELY PICTURES Adeline!!!!

Well, Kuta is full commerce and the south is generally where people go to party and shop, not so much about culture or anything else, lately it has become a traffic nightmare as well.

Sanur / Ubud / Jimbaran / Nusa Dua and many more are great places to stay, away from the craziness but still close enough to do anything you need, including dining and beaching.

But Bali is more about something like this ;) :

Since we are speaking of our little ones, Noah has become the newest member of the Agustus-Collection Family 10 months ago and will get his own collection soon, which we will call of course Noah's Ark :)

I laughed in recollection. The Balinese and Indonesians are such lovely people. They'd coo at my girls and cuddle them. My husband took to strapping Tilly to himself with the Baby Bjorn carrier. He gave up a day later when he realised he was having a great time without the baby.

Sven, Noah's gorgeous! Edi and you must be so proud. He's got the most charming toothless grin.

And your pictures! I have two words, "Lucky you!"

Kat, if Bali's good enough for the small babies, it's good enough for the big one.

Ahh, Unusual Pearls, there is in fact no need to PM you! You found the thread yourself.

(Drumroll)....
Everyone, a warm welcome and a great BIG shout out to Unusual Pearls who sold me these awesome pearls in my inital post #1.

And please, I am dying to know, how did you come about to carry these precious strange south sea pearls? When drilled, is it every bit as putrid as Sven (Augustus-Collection) has warned?
