Baffled by estimate

Persian Gulf naturals

Persian Gulf naturals

Thanks, Zeide and Richard for your advice and knowledge. I'm learning as we go. One thing I'd still like to know about Persian Gulf pearls is, do they come in a range of colors like gold, cream, white or are they basically expected to be in one certain color give or take a shade? Also, does the value change based on shade/color?

Colors of radiatas

Colors of radiatas

Hi Goldenpearl,

There are several pearl scallops in the Persian Gulf with pinctada radiata being the most common. There is a large variety of colors coming out of them that typically fetch different prices in different markets. Most pearls from the Persian Gulf, however, tend to be in the cream range but peach, pink, lavender, white, black, deep golden, green, purple, blue, and bronze-black also occur.

Hi Zeide,

So, does it make sense to you, after viewing the images of my pearls, that they would reduce the estimate by $100K - $200K, just based on color alone, saying that they were too yellow? Do you see them as too yellow for a reduction of that nature? I tried to upload a better image but file size was too large. Thanks.

Pearl colors

Hi Goldenpearl,

No, quite definitely not. But I am not trying to sell them on short notice either. The people who are likely to pay the most money for them are put off by the cultured pearl and the people who would be least put off by the cultured pearl are the ones that are least likely to appreciate the color. It is this dilemma that caused the auctioneers to cut down the opening bid. Opening bid is not the same as sale value. It is the value to get the bidding started or, in short, the amount at which it would be foolish not to bid.

Zeide,

Thank you very much for educating me and answering my many questions. I have decided to leave things alone for now and hope for the best. I saw that you mentioned you were from Germany. My family is from Austria. I'm ready to visit again. It is really beautiful in the summer. It's been nice chatting with you.
All the best.

I wonder if this pearl owner sold his necklace and at what price? That nabatee color is more appreciated today than just 6 years ago. Everyone wants goldens and light goldens are desirable.

One thing about that one cultured pearl in a strand: its placement on the strand can help identify the strand, if it should disappear. It is a precaution and I don't think the lab in Bahrain would cut it out, just note its position, which helps the id process. I have seen and heard of too many strands with one cultured pearl in them to not think that.
