    Black Akoyas...

Dyed black akoyas will have the shininess of white akoyas but I would not expect to see iridescence, if that's what you mean by luminescence. The black akoyas I've seen are darker than typical dyed freshwaters. Akoyas having a bead inside, they will also be rounder. And they may be smaller as...

I inherited pearls, and while there is so much great information, it's hard to make a call regarding these pearls!

Definitely look like imitation pearls. Re: tooth test, I have recently stopped suggesting people test pearls by rubbing them on their teeth. Teeth are harder than nacre and can scratch it. Best to just rub one pearl against another-- gently.

    Freshadama Vs Edison

Freshadamas will not be 100% round, if that matters to you (because they are not bead nucleated.)

Need help identifying/valuing an unusual pearl please.

Danny posted this also (which has not yet been approved): "Thank you all for your insights and detailed explanations! Based on how it feels like a solid single piece and considering the UV light observations, I lean toward the idea of it being a naturally fused cluster. Its shape somehow...

    Vintage fake or real

I agree, they look fake, but I will add that it's very hard to evaluate pearls photographed against a dark background. And some of the photos are out of focus also. If you would like us to take another look, plese post photos against a white background, like maybe a paper towel. Here is a...

    Help measuring pearls

    1. How many pearls does the smaller strand have? 2. How long is the 2nd strand (including the clasp)? If you don't know, lay the strand out with the clasp opened and use a ruler to measure it end to end.

How do I reuse these end cup/caps?

No, I've seen these. The end bead is open on one side (which is why you can see the fuzzy knot in the end bead in the front of the photo) and is solid on the other side (you see the closed, solid side of the end bead in the back, in the photo.) The idea is that when worn, the solid side is...

Quite a bit too high, in my opinion.

How do I reuse these end cup/caps?

You'd have to make a knot that is large enough that it would not slip out of the hole, and then apply glue to it. Try a jeweler's knot (in which you pass the thread through the loop twice before you tighten the knot. Ot 2 knots, one on top of the other.

    Restringing jade

Pattye, I suppose if one had pieces of wire in various known thicknesses one could use them to see how large a hole is.

Did I buy a fake Mikimoto necklace?

It's clearly a very pretty graduated akoya pearl necklace; your jeweler will be able to tell you whether the metal is 14K gold, as I expect it is. The jeweler will not be able to tell you if they are Mikimoto brand pearls. Only Mikimoto can authenticate them, but that service would cost you more...

    Unexpected discovery

Imitations, for various reasons. For one, it's not unusual in imitation strands to see one smaller pearl next to the clasp. I have yet to see that in a genuine pearl necklace. But also the appearance of the surface, the uniformity of the luster / shape / size/ color, the way it's strung, the...
