Got them as gifts can you tell if it's worth anything, i already have similar one's in white, don't wanna keep these, idk what type of pearls is this

The OP messaged me and said she asked her aunt about them. The aunt had bought them at a local jeweler who told her they were "Andaman pearls". Having googled a bit to see what this might refer to, I believe they are dyed bead-nucleated FWP.

    mom's pearls?

Open the clasp and measure the necklace from one end to the other, including the clasp. That is the current length. Don't try to compensate for stretched silk. Unless you are actually measuring the pearls with calipers, do not state they are 7.5mm. That is just my estimate.

    mom's pearls?

They are akoyas, not fully round. They appear to be around 7.5mm, and somewhat cream colored. The luster is soft rather than sharp, but pretty. The gold clasp is a plus. It sounds like you may be thinking of selling them. That may be the best thing if you don't wear them and if you have no one...

    Vintage cyan pearls on sterling?

Glass imitation pearls, I think. Glass imitation pearls are warmer than real pearls. Here is an easy test: If you have any other pearls that you know to be real (or that you know to be fake), leave both the cyan pearls and the other pearls in the same ambient temperature environment for a half...

    That's what I would think.

    Freshwater pearls and seawater pearls...

This is not what you are asking, but just FYI a 10x loupe will show a difference between real pearls and imitation. The real pearls will have smoother looking nacre (of course you need to look where there aren't blemishes.) However, I am not aware of any difference a loupe will show between FW...

Are these real pearls or imitation?

A happy find from a thrift store! Those are akoya pearls. Graduated strands like these were common into the 1960s or so. Usually the necklaces I've seen from WW II/Korean War era have plainer clasps. I'm a bit puzzled by the metal marks. Is it Platinum or is it 18K gold? Is part of the clasp...

Show Us Your Pearls In Action!!!

Nacre is nacre, regardless of the pearl. If your water is chlorinated, I would not shower in them regularly. Sweat can be rinsed off when you remove the earrings. Luster can be damaged by exposure over time to lots of things. • Chemicals: perfume, cosmetics (including sunscreen-- but wear...

    Tahitians? I think not

Dyed FWP is my impression, but I have to say, usually dyed FWP have more colors in them. Are they using blacker dyes now?

If you could only have five pieces, what would they be and why?

@Pearls&Pugs, I think it's fine; just credit the website for the photo or post the actual web page where the photo is found.

If you could only have five pieces, what would they be and why?

Thank goodness we don't have to limit ourselves to 5! I can't pick just 5 but I'll answer the spirit of the question-- which in a way is the answer to both questions. Shapes: For necklaces, I prefer my baroque shaped pearls (or drops, or near rounds) over my round ones. For earrings I...

    Thread size?

I had all the same issues with silk cord attached to a needle. I also had a hard time seating the knot right as the thread wasn't doubled.

    Thread size?

For almost all my pearls (up to about 13mm center pearl) I use Medium (30) Serafil. This would be for a drill hole up to 0.8mm. If your pearls are very large or have an unusually large drill hole, try Heavy.

Multicolour strand - drill fault or natural blemish?

I had to hunt a bit, but yes, I found a "before" and "after" wearing a similarly colored shirt. (Pearls reflect clothing.) Although the strand now has less contrast, I like the colors better; they go with more of my clothes. Basically I removed several silver colored pearls and replaced them...

Multicolour strand - drill fault or natural blemish?

Some years ago I bought a Tahitian necklace secondhand. The original buyer disliked a few of the pearls, but instead of replacing them or returning the necklace to the vendor within her return window, she sold it at a significant discount from what she paid for it. Lucky me! However, I found...

Mikimoto - how to help my mother

Welcome to Pearl Guide! I'm truly sorry to read of your mother's need to sell. I'm sure these are sentimental items. What I have to say may cause her to decide to keep them, but if she still decides to sell, this may lend some insight. The plain fact is that used (pre-owned) pearls just don't...
