    What are your favourite clasps?

Hi Rokor, great thread For me, functionality of a clasp is very important. For instance I have a vintage brass filigree clasp, oh boy the click of the tongue as it is inserted mmmm! It puts many modern clasps to shame. The humble round bolt ring has been in use for hundreds of years, and still...

What is this metal component called? And, is it necessary?

Hello StarryPearl These are called Grommets, and readily available online. They make a very neat clean finish on these larger holed pearls.

    drilling freshwater pearls

Hello JaciS diamond coated or not coated? I wouldn’t bother with coated bits, the benefits of the coatings aren’t really relevant to drilling pearls Plain steel or tungston? Your choice, tungsten is harder, and lasts longer if not flexed. Plain steel/high speed steel is easier to resharpen...

Hanadama Necklace - Fraudulent PSL Certificate?

I don’t think this would be fraudulent, I reckon this is likely human error on their handling of the paper work. This is why it is important to count the pearls on the way in and on the way out when handling repairs (and even as in this case new stock.) Imagine the scenario if this hadn’t been...

Dyed black freshwater or Tahitian pearls? Could you please help me out?

Hi Lisa, all the above ;-) As I said in my first post, I have worked on very similar dyed fresh water pearls years back, the posted images being quite familiar in their characteristics to what I saw crossing my bench.

Dyed black freshwater or Tahitian pearls? Could you please help me out?

Hello Nice, I have viewed your pearls a few times, good chance they are dyed fresh water pearls. Going back 15/20 years ago, I used to see similar large dyed fresh water pearls coming in unknotted like these, and with a similar clasp.

What do you think about this ring?

Hello Pearlescence- I think you missed what was written - what I wrote is that this appears to be a mount that’s a pin through the shank, no pegs or unsupported elements, this type of structure is used in a number of attachment/mounting designs. The reference to tension mount is in the context...

What do you think about this ring?

Hi eeeck, you have a gorgeous ring there- I very much doubt there are pegs involved in the setting. The images although not best quality, appear to show a pin mount (the correct name escapes me for the moment) set into the shank of the ring. Think of how the pin on a bolt ring passes through...

    Please help identify pearl

They are certainly freshwater pearls, however I have some doubts on assigning China as the origin. They could also be vintage Japanese Biwa pearls. I have a Biwa strand, with provenance, that I purchased in the eighties and they appear quite similar to these pearls.

    Tin Cup Necklace History

Thanks Douglas for the picture memory. My recollection of the floating necklace back in the early nineties was of a single diamond or pearl suspended on wire or cable. Was very effective too. In the early seventies, Elsa Peretti created the station style and this was sold through Tiffany’s. I...

    Tin Cup Necklace History

Most of us have heard of the “tin cup necklace”. But did you know that it was designed by a jewellery designer named Wendy Brigode? This was the first time that skin tone coloured cord silk, instead of chain or wire, was used to give the Invisible, or floating look. By rights, it should be...
