    Cook Islands Pearling Developments

My friends returned from Cook Islands, with an appreciation of pearls, but sadly, they couldnt decide on their favorites. They obviously needed an on hand pearl advisor with them, & I have graciously offered my services for their next visit. They did say they were impressed with the friendliness...

    My Pearls

Ditto! Also what great photos! Especially the comparison one. Very clear. Please let us in on the secrets of how they were taken.

Some of Satine de la Courcel's pearls

I think I may have the beginnings of arthritis too... sometimes I cant get the watchbacks on again after changing batteries. This is where tool handling technique works for you, rather than having to fight the joints which dont want to work. There are ways of working with wire which make use...

    New Baroque SS's at PP

When one of "us" gets a necklace like that, I'm glad it is still "in the family", so at least we can see it again from time to time. Congratulations!

Some of Satine de la Courcel's pearls

Well done Ashby! They definitely surpass any of my beginner students. Your wire wraps are better than the loops! As you become more adept at handling the needle nose pliers, the 'p' shaped loops on the headpins become even sized, more rounded, & centred over the top of the bead. There is also...

My friend thanks you, as do I. I wonder what he will bring back.

    Cook Islands Pearling Developments

I have a friend on his way to Cook Islands for a holiday. Do we have a member there to whom I should direct him to buy some pearls? They would be a gift for his girlfriend, and he knows even less than me about pearls.

    my new Kamoka Pearl Bangle

WOW! I have been known to batter a bit of silver with a hammer from time to time, & am in absolute awe of anyone who understands anticlastic forming.... and then.... bimetal! In addition of course, to those amazing pearls... Utterly brilliant.

    New pearl catalogues

Wow! I had no idea we had (another?) such an accomplished photographer in our midst! Congratulations on your beautiful work. You have made those pearls sing!

    Headpin off-cuts

Perhaps only a soldering iron tip would develop enough heat? I think using a soldering iron is called 'cold soldering' for a reason. The soldering iron only gets hot enough to melt lead solder. I havent tried, but I dont think it would get hot enough to melt silver.

    Just let me bead....

Thats quite a piece. Almost like where would beads go if Escher drew them. A sensational job of supporting the focal piece, with the same strength of design, without taking over from it.

    Swoon!

Pattye, they did look like some of the paler emeralds I have seen. The smaller keshis were somewhat translucent in parts, with a few obvious dots of dark brown (shell?), maybe thats exactly what they were: carved shell? The front one certainly looked more like pearl. The seed pearls varied quite...

    Swoon!

I love the little bow. The Amethyst is set in rose gold, and the back of the bail. Most of the rest seems to be yellower, so perhaps a piece composed of collected elements. The chain has the prettiest grey/lavender pearls, with a bigger central one, suggesting it could be worn without the bow...

    Swoon!

More, one with an interesting clasp, with gorgeous microscopic pearls, and another, with a silver clasp, similar to one my Nana wore in the 60's.

    Swoon!

Ok, quite a few pics here, so I'll divide them into a few posts. The jewellery is from his great grandmother, who lived in the goldfields. Im learning to guess their possible age and origins. Any expert opinions encouraged!

    Swoon!

Just to tease you all, the same customer brought in more of his loot, which I quickly photographed, & will post tomorrow. There are some incredible pearls, alongside some truly amazing diamonds, with some lacklustre strands as well.

long term project: my "garden" necklace

You have a glorious eye for colour. It must have been fun collecting the gemmies (...and the pearls)

    Happy Springtime!

I was so drawn to your pendant, I didnt notice the Azaleas til now, Sheri. Mine are flowering now too! On the other side of the world. Maybe something to do with the shredding of the leaves in the hail storm 2 weeks ago, as a reaction to stress.

    Happy Springtime!

Awww thanks! I love the contrast of the rustic rusted metal, & the soft glow of the pearl, Sheri.
