I have been looking for black pearls online for a while now, and have learned through online research that black pearls are only black if they are Tahitian pearls.

For the most part that is true, although pearls from the Sea of Cortez are also dark and similar to Tahitian pearls. Freshwater and akoya pearls are not naturally black. Those pearls are always dyed.

I'd add that if you are looking for pitch-black black pearls you won't be happy. Most 'black' pearls, even Tahitians aren't just black but dark grey or dark green etc. The only really black black pearls I've ever seen are ones which have been over dyed and look like a 100 year old person with black hair. just wrong
