They could be Chinese cultured freshwater pearls. The black ones would be dyed. These would be solid nacre without any bead inside.

Gently rub two of them together, or rub one pearl against the edge of your front tooth. If the pearls are real, they will feel a bit gritty; imitation pearls would feel smooth.

Might the dark strands be garnets ... I think I see some translucency ?

I think you may be right, Cathy. I see a bit of translucency too in that second photo.

I am going to try to get a better picture on the weekend ...I bought it for $ 30 Canadian which is around $ 25 USD ..would that be a good investments or is not worth the price?

If you bought it because you like it (as opposed to buying it to resell it), you did fine. :)

I don't consider any jewelry to be an investment. People generally lose money when reselling jewelry, and pearls in particular do not hold their value on resale. I buy jewelry because I like it, for my own enjoyment.

I thought they looked like garnets, too. I say you got a good price for the necklace. Those types of pearls and garnets are both very inexpensive, in the $25 range. If the clasp is solid gold, then the clasp is worth more than the entire necklace. The clasp could be worth about $300 when new.
