Hi everyone,

I would like your advice on this item for sale on eBay.

It says AAA Akoya 6.0 to 6.5mm, thick nacre, round, high luster, 120cm necklace, 14k gold clasp for 243 US$.

The listing is in bad French. The seller has good feedback.

Well, I am not all that good with French, but I beleive that the return policy is that you can return it within 7 days and the estimated delivery time to the US is 2-3 weeks.

The other thing that bothers me is that they publish thier grading scale and thier top grade is supposed to be AAA. They then routinely list other items as AAA+ and even one set of black Akoya earrings listed as AAA+++ (even though in the photos of that particular listing I can see scratches on the pearls).

Also, after really studying that photo, the surface quality of the pearls does not look smooth at all. Maybe it is just me, but in looking at top three rows on the right hand side of the picture, it seems as if there are some visible scratches.

Those are my observations.

I'd be a little worried about the fact the seller has 11 negative and 14 neutral comments in the last year. That's very high! Most of the time when people leave neutral comments on eBay, they wanted to leave negative feedback, but didn't want the seller to reciprocate with negative feedback.

You can bet that the seller is only guessing on the nacre thickness. I doubt they deal in such quantity that they regularly cut the pearls (or x-ray them) to determine nacre thickness.

The luster looks good in the picture, and the blemishing is minimal. I would ask the seller if the necklace in the picture is the one they are selling (I'm betting it isn't). Often, an eBay seller will use the same picture over and over. This seller has done this before. Looking at their past auctions, most of the auctions they list as private (which worries me), but of the few that are public, I see at least one picture which was used for more than one auction.

This is definitely a scam operation. This auction shows that the seller is not honest:

What is this eBay obsession with 'Japanese Freshwater Pearls', I wonder? All of their FW auctions state the same thing!

I am glad you pointed this auction out to me, however. They are actually using one photo in several of their auctions of which I own the copyright. It is a piece which we only sell on our European Websites, but we shot the piece. You will see which one it is when the auctions are removed from eBay in about 2 hours:D

Thanks for your answers.

I was looking at a few eBay sellers, some clearly are selling overpriced necklaces, lying on the quality, sometimes on the origin and type of pearls and not specifying whether the pearls have been dyed or not.

I wasn't too sure about this one which is why I submitted one of his item to your scrutiny.

One more eBay seller on my blacklist :)

Fran?ois-Xavier.
