I purchased these on ebay for a gift - they are marked with the M in the oyster shell with 750 and have the hanging M charm - seller did not have a receipt or certificate but did have the box, baggy with mikimoto stamped polishing cloth, etc and I am getting ready to fedex to mikimoto new york for $50 for an appraisal - is there any way they could be fake? i have never seen or heard of fake mikimoto pearls, but i know everything else can be copied so perhaps mikimoto pearls can be too. Is it worth sending them? I have 30 days to return them - thanks for any help!

Hi Katherine,

They look authentic to me. Since 90% of the Mikimoto value is in the clasp, box, and documentation, You already got most Mikivalues covered. Congratulations, compared to retail you got a steal of a deal.

thanks!

thanks!

Thanks- I have been watching the ebay auctions for the last year for something and have learned about the clasp, etc. but wondered if someone could "fake" a clasp - I think I will still send to Mikimoto for appraisal- my insurance company will need it- again, thanks for your helpful response.

They do appear to be Mikimoto pearls. The seller has very high feedback and everything appears to be legitimate. I think spending the $50 on the appraisal is a wise idea! Congratulations on the great deal!

thanks-fedex picked up the pearls today!

thanks-fedex picked up the pearls today!

Thanks for all of your help - this website has been very helpful to me- trying to find mikimoto pearls at a bargain price has taken quite a long time - I am hoping i won't be disappointed in the appraisal - it seems other jewelry stores do carry mikimoto 18" strands at 2,000 but they are smaller pearls and not always the "A" grade the seller promised me. So I will post the results if you are interested - again, many thanks- I read through most of the posts on this website, not just the ebay ones trying to make a good decision - it has been like my own personal advisor!

Mikimotos on E-Bay

I have to say that I am really astounded that You fond these pearls on E-bay. They do look very nice! Please let us know what the appraisal says.

mikimoto appraisal came back at $2750

mikimoto appraisal came back at $2750

They confirmed they are class A pearls and the appraisal is $2750, not really very close to the sellers' listed appraisal at $4150 and have emailed her to tell her. I had originally asked for an appraisal and she said they were a gift that mikimoto had told her the retail was 4150 - so do you think I should keep them and did I still get a good deal? Now I am really confused, I searched a couple of online stores for class A 8MM pearls by mikimoto and they are all 4-6K so why would the appraisal only be for $2750? Any guidance would be helpful - I guess the only thing could be if she didn't get the size of the pearl right - and I forgot to ask Mikimoto what the size was for these. Thanks everyone:(

Hi,

Mikimoto gave you a resale appraisal figure not an original purchase figure. You still did good by paying less than secondary market appraisal and well less than half of retail. Not to mention that you probably did not have to pay sales tax.

Ebay pearls retail $4500 per mikimoto new york!

Ebay pearls retail $4500 per mikimoto new york!

Thanks to all of you - and this great forum, i made a very good buy on ebay- 8MM Class/Grade "A" genuine mikimoto, 18K white gold clasp plus "M" charm (I paid $2100 on ebay) - retail per Mikimoto New York is $4500, so I am really happy! but do i really have to send them back every year for restringing at $3 per inch if I don't wear them very much?? Thanks again- K

Hi Katherine,

Have them restrung when the silk thread starts looking stretched and/or dirty. Any local stringer is likely to give you a better deal than US$3.00 per inch plus shipping and insurance not to mention that locals are wont to be faster about it.
