Valuation of Double Strand of Natural Pearls

Hello PG! I would like to know best place to get a valuation for a double strand of natural pearls in the United States. (the pearls were inherited from grandfather).

Everybody knows the Pearl Guide is one of the best resources for pearls on the internet.

The natural pearls have a Gemological Institute of America Lab report attesting to the sizes and the fact that they are all natural pearls. The report is dated March 10, 1965.
They have all been xray fluor & x-radiograph.

Double strand
101 pearls graduated from 5.5 to 3.5mm
92 pearls graduated 6.01 to 3.76mm

8 pearls on string 4.05mm

51 pearls on a string 5.3mm to 3.95mm

Pattye, they are not my pearls, the owner of the double strand of natural pearls is from United States (IA) and would like to know after valuation, the best place to sell them. Unfortunately I do not have a photo of the pearls.

Pattye - if the pearls already have full paperwork do they need it again?

If they are attractive and in good condition, an auction house would be the best place to sell them. The auction house would be able to tell you how much they would sell for. As you already have the certificate, contact Christie's or Sothebys. They have staff appraisers who are familiar with the world pearl market.

Hi pearlessence - the pearls were appraised in 1965, over 40 years ago, so i think it would be advisable to have them appraised again, at least for insurance purposes.

Hi knotty panda - as they have been certified as natural, staff appraisers of Christie's may be be able to help out with a valuation like you mentioned. I noticed Christie's (among other pearl market leaders) on the members list of the Dubai Pearl Exchange. http://www.dpe.ae/

Hi,

The value depends upon the shape, luster, and color matching. They are small, and the current wholesale market value would probably go something like this:

AAA luster and mostly nice round $15,000 or less US
A Luster with some off rounds $6,000 US
B Luster with many out of round $3,000 US

You could also contact Mr KC Bell in the USA who is a pearl dealer/collector for any advice. Please see the contact details for him in this pdf (towards the end). Had to search for his e-mail on the www as I didn't have it at hand and only know him a little. The auction houses are also a good option as others have already said and you have already received Dr. Stern's opinion.
